Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

Ko Chang - Thailande

Asia » Thailand » East » Ko Chang

Our first Thai meal....6 days in!!
Arrived in Koh Chang (Elephant Island) on Thurs 25th Sept. As journeys go, it wasn't too arduous, with a bus journey from Bangkok to Trat for 6 hours then the ferry to Koh Chang which takes about an hour. We are staying at the Koh Chang Kacha Resort - nice pool and beach and brekkie included in cost. Had our first Thai meal of the trip (yes, we know its sad . . ) and instantly regretted it as the Thai belly hit us both with vigour!! Koh Chang very quiet at present as low season. We are staying in the [View Full Entry]

On our way to Koh Chang. The Iseland from a distance
Hi There... Two days, that was how long we could stand the Bangkok dirt and pollution. Last night, after a beer, we decided to leave the big city, for a small bounty island. Ko Chang. So we went to buy tickets, 700 bath for a return ticket!!! They might as well just hand them out for free.. Its crazy.. So cheap! Then, smart as we are, or not are, we went back to the bar and had more beers... And went upstairs where the karaoke was, and had more beers... However it wasnt karaoke, it was live music, and actually really [View Full Entry]

Ko Chang adventures

Asia » Thailand » East » Ko Chang
As I continue to slowly try and catch up on my blogs, I have finally arrived at the week long adventures of Mat and Kassia. On our first day on the second largest island in Thailand we wandered around a little aimlessly until we settled on some very nice $10 a night bungalows. By nice I mean there was a shower, mosquito net and a restaurant attached. Oh and I think the toilet flushed which was a bit of a bonus. That night Mat and I proceeded to get wasted with a lovely English couple. Mat got his picture taken at [View Full Entry]

The Kayak A short play written by Kristin Howell Act 1 Scene 1 Setting: The early morning hours in a resort on a Thai island Christina: What do you wanna do today? Kristin: I think it's raining. Eric: Go back to bed. I don't even get up this early on a school day. That's not rain. It's buckets of water falling from the sky. Scene 2 Christina: It stopped raining! It's so nice out, blue sky, sun shinning. Lets go to the beach. Kristin: Beach again? We've been at the beach for three days. Oh, I hate islands. Eric: Go back [View Full Entry]

THE STORY OF A GIRL AND A SNORKEL Picture this...crystal clear water, turquoise, aqua, just about every color one would ever want it to be. Justoff the beach of a tiny little uninhabited island. A total paradise. One would probably live here if she could. All this and one of Thailands most famous reefs. And then it was time to go in... ...all suited up: two flippers, a life vest, a tight mask with a snorkel, and a girl fully motivated to conquer the ocean and all the lil slimy, disgusting and man-eating fish that she may encounter on her journey. Hey there! We arrived on Koh Chang Island after a 5 hour bus journey from Bangkok, we had to take a ferry across which was about 20minutes. The view from the ferry was amazing, very lush green and surrounded by clear green water. Our first stop was White Sands which is a bit touristy but the closest resort, we were really tired and needed to rest so we stayed there for 2 nights, it has a beautiful beach that goes on for miles! We hired a moped the next day and had a good look around the Island, it is the [View Full Entry]

The Dharma Initiative

Asia » Thailand » East » Ko Chang
After four days of riding buses (4 hrs to Pai, 4 back from Pai, 11 to Bangkok, 7 to Trat), we arrived on Ko Chang, an island off the eastern coast of Thailand, close to Cambodia. We have been in search of a crystal clear blue beach, but have found none. June through October is the wet season, so although the water is slightly more clear than that of back home, it's still not the picturesque beach we were hoping for before arriving. On our first day of arriving we just wanted to eat and rest. Before traveling this summer I [View Full Entry]

That is the extent of my Thai and I'm not even sure if I spelled it correctly! Anyways it means "Hello," and andy a good one to know! To tell you the truth there is not really much to report about. We really have been relaxing these few days. Basically, our days have been spent reading, sitting on the beach, playing cards, swimming in the pool, getting massages, watching the Olympics in Thai, observing the ailligators and enjoying the sunset. The girls have been appreciating my lovely renditions of Whitney Houston and Justin Timberlake. (I never understood, why I didn't get [View Full Entry]
