Kanchanaburi Travel Blogs

Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

Hi All, After a quick flight into Bangkok we flew the coop rather quickly trying to avoid the filth of the town!!..sorry thats a bit harsh but when you are flying in and see the smog..you kinda get my drift!! We were pretty lucky, finding a place to get my Vietnam Visa first - 1550 Baht. We purchased a ticket to Kanchanaburi. Two and a half hours on a packed, sweaty badly air-con. van! Again the bus had to wait for me as I was having trouble establishing some form of arrangement with the toileting facilities..yes a little beneath me..well actually [View Full Entry]

Conrad on the Trail to Hell
its been a while since my first post. so i'll start where i left off. after we arrived in chiang mai we went and saw a few of the watts and the night bazaar. shortley after that (about 2 or 3 days) we decided to go on a brisk 3 day 2 night trek. very brisk indeed. the first day was absolute HELL. it was particularily hot that day the only break was for about an hour and a half of extremely heavy rain (in which we continued to trek through, naturally.) the paths were near strait up and a stream [View Full Entry]

Kan-chan-aburi. It’s a mouthful, and I still can't seem to pronouce it correctly. Kanchanaburi is one of the 76 provinces in Thailand. It is also the province where the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai, the ruins of Ayutthaya, the Allied War Cemetery, and the JEATH Museum are. The Christian University of Thailand is also there. However, we didn’t spend much time there. We mostly drove through and saw the above places, so I don’t have much to say about it except that the scenery was nice, and the Night Market in Nakorn Pathom (the town Christian University is in) was [View Full Entry]

Please note - we are writing our blogs together however at some points we write in first person to avoid confusion! Hi all! Thanks for your emails, its nice to hear from you all! It seems that after our last post, the folks back home are a little concerned that we are not finding any food to eat, so just to reassure you please see the pictures attached! We had a great time in Kanchanaburi, upon arrival we picked a random riverside guesthouse out of our Lonely Planet book called 'Sugar Cane Guesthouse'. It was one of the cheapest in the [View Full Entry]

RIVER RIDE

Hi everyone! I'm a dirty, dirty woman! I have a few fun facts to share with you about Thailand. The best of the fun facts I have to share is about the Buddhist monks. As I mentioned before, Thailand is a very Buddhist country. Monks are everywhere here, and they stick out in the crowds here with their distinctive orange saffron dyed robes....kind of like big carrots....big holy carrots. What is really interesting about these monks is that women are not allowed to touch them (nor can they touch women, and they won't). There are a few reasons for this: 1) [View Full Entry]

Well we got to kanchanaburi expecting the heat to waiver alittle bit now we are outside thi city but no its even hotter. Only spent two nights and a day, went on a trip and did my first elephant ride. lovely bamboo rafting then onto the erawan waterfalls. Climbed all the way to the top 7 tiers on all, took about an hour and half, rewarded with a swim in a turqoise pool with lots of fishys. Great. Wicked thunderstorm, no thunder just amazing fork lightning. [View Full Entry]

Viagra! Viagra! Not something you hear everyday when you enter a new country. After leaving Krabi I had a date with the border and a visa run in Burma, an altogether forgettable activity. Involving 6 hours and just about every method of transportation; motorbikes, buses, longtail boats and even a pedal bike I entered and left Burma in a matter of minutes. That wasn't before being offered every kind of pharmacy stimulant on the market, I'm told that 50 cents a pill is quite a good deal though. During my visa run I met an expat from New Jersey with a [View Full Entry]

Once part of the Death Railway during the World War II.
Hello to you all. Well my last week in Thailand went by quite quickly. I spent it in the Western part of the Country near the Myamar border along the River Kwae. I stayed in a guest house that was suspended over the river, which allowed for beautiful views and a cultural experience. For a couple days I would sit on traditional Thai pyramid cushions, drinking fresh fruit smoothies and lassies, while loud longtail boats would race bye with loads of tourists. All the activities are partook in were relaxing and seemed to have a beautiful view of the mountains, rivers, [View Full Entry]
