Background: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.

The airport has been under siege from anti government supporters and despite the fact that there have been riot police outside the airport for days, nothing is happening for fear of bloodshed. Things have swung between peaceful protest to the brink of civil war and there have been grenades, bombs, shootings and attacks alongside gentle marches. The country is in absolute chaos and the tension is rising. Today there is a court case which could in effect dissolve parliament and put the country into military rule. Generally it's all a bit shit. Fortunately, I have not witnessed the clashes first h [View Full Entry]

Of Endings, and of new Beginnings! So, with a note of tristesse, I must officially inform that my round-the-world ticket has just expired... On November 22nd, exactly a year had passed since I had gotten on the plane at Heathrow, on my way to Antananarivo. This last leg was from Salvador de Bahia, Brasil, back to London, effectively closing the loop. End of trip. Basta. Finito. For a nostalgic recap, I re-read my posts, looked at the photos, saw the amount of wonderful people I met, the exciting and thrilling 'alive' moments from Madagascar to South Africa alone, yet, [View Full Entry]

F***ing hell

Aw jeez. Well, I'm in Bangkok, and my plan was to have a few nice days Christmas shopping here before I leave on Wednesday. Unfortuately, that's impossible, since getting my flight taken care of has become a big hairy mess. I'm waiting in a line right now with ANA trying to figure out if I'll be able to fly out of a navy base outside of Bangkok on time. I sure hope so, because I am really tired of Thailand right now. The PAD has inconvenienced a lot of tourists, and it feels personal, because we all came to this country [View Full Entry]

Khoa San Rd is a 40-year old festering street of filth. Its dirty, has dodgy people including kids, bastard tuk tuk drivers, shitty hotels and guys that you describe as she or she/he. It pretty much sums up Thailand minus the beaches. Everything that is wrong with Thailand started here and is still here. This is the crappiest place in all of SE Asia. Khoa San Rd is one of the most inconvenient backpacker joints in the world. Sure it’s close to the palace and reclining Buddha. (So I can see why originally it was chosen) but nowadays its nowhere near [View Full Entry]

Vores nye hotel

Endnu en dag i Bangkok

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok

I'm a tourist get me out of here!!! Greetings! After a couple of days sitting it out in Ko San Road I started to feel as if I was part of the set from the film Ground Hog Day... every morning I wake up, rush to the internet room to check my emails. As soon as I step foot outside, "The Palace" I am hounded by Tuk Tuk drivers offering to take me anywhere I want for 5p if I go via 7 gem shops, the odd man pushing a ping pong show onto me (despite the fact that I [View Full Entry]

Dort 2 Tage bleiben.
