Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...from Home, in Bangkok!
This is it, after 18 months...when in late June 2012 the movers came in to pack most of our "stuffs" in storage..18 months later, the same movers are back....we have gone around the world, but our 120 boxes and 20 cubic meters didn't move much...and they are back...at home!
Many people live their life thinking....if only one day I could...
I don't believe in dreams when it comes to deal with one's life...I believe in projects....than later on, after some planning, and some hard work, and a little of luck, in amazing experiences...and for me, those are often simply...on the run. After living 17 years in Asia, I needed a little break... but not a big one! Never forgetting my own little quote, Asia is my home, the world is my garden...we spent 18 months in the garden! Indeed, even including some camping!
So way back...you know, few years ago...one day I said, let's go for a year in Argentina....we did, and yes, that year was amazing. Than to recover from a year of amazing food, people and wine...and quite
a messy country too...we went, 6 months on the road...sometimes 3 of us, sometimes myself alone. One rule, what you have lived, will not change, but it will change you...and nobody can ever take these experiences you lived away from you. At 40, I never own a car...or a home, but I feel home on earth, and renting a car is never an issue...
Before I did this trip...you know...little 18 months first round the world for Tiffany and Leslie, I spent a lot of time with educators trying to find out the do and don't of such an adventure. The common understanding was...do it before they are 14, and after this, it's stability and specially, stability at school.
So in less than 10 days, Tiffany and Leslie are moving back to their former school...and in a few weeks time, I'll find out if I did right or wrong to take them out of it for a little while. They have learned a lot on the road...but will that be enough to cover for the academics they haven't digested. We all believe yes, I'll know pretty soon if this is the correct answer!
Leslie is reaching university in 4 years and half, and Tiffany, it's six and a half years...so for now, we are in Bangkok for few years. Time to settle....time to enjoy. Imagine what will happen to me once they are both at university...that's what I call a Bachelor Life..in a few years time!
Great news, while we were away....many friends have moved in from Shanghai, KL or even Singapore. My social life may look a lot different here than what it was on my last stay in Bangkok from 2009 to 2012. Let's bring the party!
We have moved back in a pretty nice flat, solid upgrade from our last stay in Bangkok...so everything is looking nicely at the year 2014...
We will also travel a little less (considering the last 18 months)! And for those who wonders, I'm finally going to stop sending you new blog entries every three to four days...except obviously when it is time for school holidays, which you may guess, are still pretty often. I have a kind of smile on my face when I'm writing that we are back to a normal life.
As if life has ever been normal! But for me, it's back to the love of cooking...add to this the fun of sourcing pretty nice food all around Bangkok. I'm also back to the not so lovely tasks of cleaning, ironing.....the day to day activities of running a family life. I know...why my kids don't get me anything for Mother's Day...but even better....you can ask yourselves why we do not have a full time maid at home when that young (or not so young) lady would cost me less than 200usd a month...working full time 6 days per week...and being what they call a live-in...sleeping in a "room" that we use as a storage. Sorry, not for me, not my education model...I love 5 stars hotel...at home, I clean!
I'm also writing this seeing BBC World News showing about the demonstrations rising around....in Bangkok! Well, 2 days ago I was in the middle of one, as I simply had to reach the metro station...First rule, as a foreigner, we are guest here, we do not get involved. Second...all this is taking place far away from school, home or shop where we shop...so "revolution" may happen again here...as
it did few times already the last 10 years...most will live as usual...we plan to do exactly this, enjoying the land of smiles...and looking at CNN and BBC to know what is happening...in the back of the garden!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, and if you visit Bangkok...stop for a long lunch...to share the love of this fabulous country! And let's bring on 2014!!!
PS And if you wonder why we did visit the Grand Palace in our first week here...Tiffany never saw it, so it's now, or never...
