Koh San Road, 14th April
View from our hotel roof Songkran in Bangkok
Ok, so I wouldn't say that we left Koh Lanta kicking and screaming. However, the thought of Bangkok with all it's noise, pollution, cars, dogs and hawkers wasn't "ideal". After a ferry journey with some sun baking and the obligatory "slip, slap slop", all to the sound of George Harrisons "My Sweet Lord" we jumped on a plane and touched down two hours later.
Taxi please sir - We were immediately reminded that we were in the midst of Songkran - The Water Festival/Thai New Yearwith groups of 10-15 people on the back of a pick up truck throwing alot of water at every other traveller enjoying the festivities. The slow realisation that we have the following to contend with painted an interesting picture in our minds:
4 bags and 30+kg's of luggage.
No bed to stay in but the address of a back packers in the heart of Koh San Road.
Approximately 10,000 people on/around Koh San Road armed with water pistols and face packs.......
Paper, Scissors, Rock - Dom is looking for the Backpackers and YT is enjoying a cold Chang. Rock on!
However, I have to say
that despite the 45 minute trail through the crowds, the agro, the water, the face packs and the change of clothes - Songkrat ROCKED and we had a great weekend! The people as usual smiled their colgate smiles, the beer and water flowed, along with crowd on and around Koh San Road. We enjoyed a 15 baht Pad Thai, watched the festivities from our roof top pool and hit the hay! The next day we checked out of our $25 a night back packers and moved into a hotel - 3x the price and worth every penny.....
If you ever get the chance to visit Bangkok diring the Songkrat festival then take it - An awesome experience indeed. Next stop China and visa issues.....
