I love, love, love, love, love, LOVE Thailand. I love the friendly, smiling people and the beautiful green lushness of the trees and grass. I love the mouthwatering aromas of the equally delicious food and I love the little ladies in the wide brimmed straw hats selling freshly sliced \ mangos from their tiny carts. I even love the cold showers. I am as happy as a clam nestled in the sand of a white beach.
Of course, this is only Bangkok, my first taste of Thailand. However, it can only get better when leaving the big city behind. We are staying on Khao San Road, the epic center of the touristy industry. Bright lights, thumping music and internet cafes are everywhere - - similiar to the crowded throngs on South Beach, Miami. Our little bungalo that we are calling 'home' right now is tucked away from the action on a lazy side street and is called the Gecko house. Right across the street is a wonderful little cafe where we can buy rice with fresh pineapple and tofu for 30 B. Did I mention that I love it here?
As we are waiting for our Laos visa to be processed, we are going to escape from the crowds for a couple of days and head to Kanchanaburi - a short 2 hour train ride away. A couple days of explore caves and jumping off of a seven story waterfall into refreshing little pools of water below. Don't worry parent's - - we won't jump off the top tier - - perhaps just a few stories high. After picking up our visas, we will head north to Chaing Mia and ride elephants, go white water rafting, trek into the hills to see some native tribes, go horse back riding in the mountains, and whatever else we come across.

well, you must be the first person i hear that actually likes bangkok, haha! me, i couldn't wait to get out of that city! if you are heading up north, one really nice place to go is chiang- rai. everyone tends to forget about it inbetween going to chiang- mai, and hitting the border to laos. you can get some good trekking here, and it's less party- party than chiang- mai! since you seem to have enough time, do not miss it!! the night market is a must, and the teepee bar is an alternative option to the boring farlang bars around kao sarn road, haha! ;) there's a cool french guy that works there, and it's a really mellow place!
anyway, good luck, god speed and all that! ;)

Hey Ash,
It is great to hear that you are having such a great time. Just reading your journal makes me wish I was there. Continue to be safe and I look forward to reading your next journal. - Em (M&M)
Hi Ash,
Rebecca and I have been reading your travelblogs and it brought back memories. We also flew to Mai Hong Son on the Burma border for a few days.
See you in September. - Ed
I've enjoyed your journals. I spent 6 great, wonderful days in Bangkok in April. I didn't want to leave. Now heading for Chaing Mia. I'm a partier but damn, I can't keep up with Bangkok! A slower pace in the Mts. sounds great. I'm a gay male. Any suggestions for my trip. Do I need an international licnse?
Thanks and enjoy!
Greg
