Those of you who know me quite well know I love eating Asian food of all varieties. I have to say I’ve never been in a city like Bangkok where literally type of Asian origin was available and sometime in a single place. Eating food “on the go” from street stalls is very common, the major difference here compared to India is hygiene and associated stomach bugs do not seem to be a problem and culturally all kinds of people happily eat out by a street stall.
However they were not the main feature for, as hinted at in the title of this blog I found the food court to end all food courts in one of their main shopping centres Siam Paragon. There were over 70 (that’s right seventy) different outlets offering every kind of food known to man (with some European exceptions, but hey I’m sure the German’s and the British won’t mind). To give you some examples, 5 Japanese restaurants, 8 different ice cream sellers, 9 different cake outlets, 5 smoothie makers, seafood, soups, Burger King King, Mcdonals et al for the heathens. There were American specialists such as Dairy Queen, Mexican, Italian, Indian, Malaysian, Vietnamese and of
course about 20+ Thai varying in size from simple takeaway stalls for one type of dish (Chicken + rice) to full sit down posh grub.
I must have wandered around for at least 30 mins just taking it all in, and trying lots of samples. If you are a foodie, this is pretty close to paradise
I went three times, the first having a superb Japanese Bento dish (thought of you Ian R mate ), followed by the most amazingly crafted Ice Cream I’ve ever eaten. I hope the attached video works, but in case not, let me describe the process:
On a marble slab, take two luxury ice cream scoops of rich caramel and dark brooding chocolate, and then fold them into a delicately layered mix. Now fold in fresh Banana slices and Belgian chocolate chips. In parallel create a fresh hot waffle cone and dip into hot melted chocolate. Add the layered ice cream, more banana for decoration, then drizzle hot rich maple over the top and a smattering of extra chocolate chips to finish. Anyone would think I’m little obsessed by chocolate things and yes it tasted amazing.
I knew I would
like Thai food, it’s one of my favourite eat out treats, but I didn’t realise how much variety I would find, how good it is and how cheap it all was. The Japanese dish would set you back at least £25 in the UK, it cost me £5.50 for the whole meal. So if you like Asian food, visiting Bangkok and its food courts are a must!
