1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan. Taiwan reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1946 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within the governing structure. In 2000, Taiwan underwent its first peaceful transfer of power from the Nationalist to the Democratic Progressive Party. Throughout this period, the island prospered and became one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform. How exciting -- my FIRST overseas trip at the ripe old age of 26. We are headed to the United States via Taiwan. Well I will start this blog with another embarrassing first....... my first ride in a TAXI... yes you heard right, I have never been in a taxi. So I was even excited about that. And what a lovely taxi driver she was. She had 7 kids and told us all about them and how successful they were.. I think one was a doctor and a lawyer and the other children were following in the same path studying to [View Full Entry]

The Accidental Tourist Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
Do you know how long I have waited to have an excuse to use that as a subject line? Too long. Too long. My visa woes have followed me to Japan. After having to do the crazy 24 hour visa run from Korea to Japan about 9 months ago, my company in Japan told me they could not process my work visa before my toursit visa expired, so I had to leave the country. For regular readers, you can probably guess there was no way I was going back to Korea. My company gave me very little notice, so Jen and [View Full Entry]

Meat the American... Asia » Taiwan » Taipei
Sleeping in another morning before packing my things and checking out. I go out to grab a quick bite before meeting Judy around noon. She is also packed and ready to accompany me to Taipei for a few days. We get the tickets at a small Free Go Bus office, their green buses being painted with big dalmatians, an amusing case of Greyhound ripoff. It turns out the sevice is not as express as last time, making a few stops along the way, but it is a daylight trip and much more interesting. We finally arrive at Taipei main railway sation [View Full Entry]

Scooter territory Asia » Taiwan » Taichung
After a good night's rest I wake up to find that my face is in shreds. The Thai colour is obviously coming off fast. Judy picks me up for lunch before we go out for some sightseeing on foot, the streets filled with little kids in school uniforms rushing for home. We walk both large avenues lined with shopping malls, banks and office towers and narrow streets full of little shops and residences. The traffic goes from being nearly non existent to chaotic. Taiwan is definietly scooter territory, everywhere the sidewalks are cluttered with parked rides and colourful helmets. This is [View Full Entry]

Depends on who you are really. While Kay is returning to reality I will continue with a jump to the next location. The old man picks us up at the hotel at 6.30 and we're on our way to the airport after having been delayed 25 minutes due to some amazingly poor performance by the checkout clerk. My eye still looks a bit weird but I don't have any problems using it anymore. I had a really good time in Thailand and feel a bit sad to press on with my itinerary, but the mission must go on. After saying our [View Full Entry]

Saying goodbye to our new friend
The Li Chia Royal Garden Hotel
The room at the Li Chia Royal Garden Hotel

My second stint as an ESL teacher landed me in Taiwan. I was convinced to make a trip to this land of many wonders by a friend of mine that I taught with in South Korea. So, I hopped a flight in August 2003 and headed to Yuanlin to meet up with Jeno. Jeno and I have some crazy stories to share, but I'll save some of those for my small South Korea blog. When I arrived, I was completely awake and so we decided to drop my bags at Jeno's place and go grab a bite to eat. This was [View Full Entry]

Hsin Yin Asia » Taiwan
Taiwan is a country of opposites. Just as polluted and populted as Kaohsiung was, Hsin Yin is full of green fields and raice paddies. While Kaohsiung smelt of animal blood (from the wet markets) and rotten egg gas, here all I can smell is the frying of garlic and grass cuttings. Finally we have a school to work at called Sesame Street. We literally have to teach about Big Bird and the Cookie Monster and it's like I'm 5 again and watching reruns of the show. There are 2 locations of the school, one we will actually live on site and [View Full Entry]

To all of those (me included) who though I would never make it..... I'm here in Taiwan!! The flight was ok, had to wear a mask for 11hours after the flight attendants freaked out when a man started to cough and thought he had SARS and made us all put on our masks. The only thing I was bummed about was I couldn't eat my packet of twisties through a mask!! I arrived in Kaohsiung (pronunced Gow Shung) late at night and was picked up by Janis one of the english teachers I will be working with. The first thing I [View Full Entry]
