This day started with a loud noise outside of the hotel room. The students from Taichung high school are lining outside of the cafeteria (long frgging line!) for their final meal before departure, so we had to resort to good old McDonalds. The great thing about Kenting is the convenience, a few minutes walk to all the little stores and vacation needs (scooter rentals and kayaking and scuba diving etc). Hsiao Du pork buns was on my to-do list in Kenting, so we got a taxi. "You might have to be in line for a while," said the taxi driver. Really? What is this place like? Ni hao! (hello in Chinese) Or I suppose I should say zao an (Good Morning! in Chinese) I hope life is finding you well. I know it's been a bit since my last update, much has happened since I last emailed you. A few weekends ago, I went to Kenting National Park with a couple of new teachers from Cornel as well as members of the church I've been attending. I just spent 2 relaxing days in Kenting- a National Park/ beach area in Taiwan. Marco closed his teashop and about 25 of his employees, friends (less than half of whom spoke English), and I all hopped into about 5 separate cars and caravaned it down the 2 hour drive to spend a couple of much needed days at the beach- it has been over 90 degrees here almost everyday, so I was excited just thinking about being able to go swimming. We stopped for lunch along the way at a busy seafood restaurant. Kenting is known for it's great, cheap seafood. I was a little worried being a vegetarian and all, but luckily I wasn't alone. Once Chinese New Year's Eve was over, it was time to head to the beach. We spent three days there. The plan was to surf and hike. The weather wasn't too great, but we did get a day of surfing in on Claire's birthday. Other than that, it was cool - literally and figuratively. Wednesday was Claire's birthday. It was cool. Hey...?...it's late July 2010, and I'm just getting around to posting this. We've been busy. Really busy. We'll be finished with Taiwan on September 1st. From here we'll head to Kuala Lumpur for a few days of R&R and hopefully to meet up with a few friends (Rob included!) and then we'll head to Shillong, India for some volunteer work with Impulse NGO Network. 以為大雨已停，冒險沿公路步行出南灣，沿途望著無邊無際的滔天巨浪，徒感無奈。更無可奈何的是走了一大半路程又下大雨，的士司機看準了我們不上不落的尷尬情況，約5分鐘的車程，收了我們300大元。 在市內雨傘給吹反了，我已經把傘對準逆風的方向，仍無法收回。此時有路人提醒我們傘要向地下，果然見效，但我百思不得其解。 中午時遺下了雨傘在民宿樓下的7-11雨具架，到晚上準備外出吃晚餐時才想起來；但正如我所料，雨傘仍留在原處，並已經近乎乾透。今天就像張良般學乖了，晚上6時左右便外出覓食，但結果還是一樣，未曾想過，今天的晚餐要在7-11享用，今晚是焗海鮮飯，聽說裡面的米是台灣本土品種，都算是見識一番。 又是電視... read more

飛機在高雄降落，只覺得天氣有點悶熱，空氣混濁有如香港。負責接送的司機「王大哥」幾乎接錯人（好像因為另一位仁兄是同姓的），見到他的車子後才發現其實他是一位的士司機，後排還坐着一對同樣是要到墾丁民宿的香港男女。王大哥在公路上逢車過車，也花了個多小時才到達，也就是說同時走進了颱風芭瑪的外圍雨帶。 的士停泊在民宿外的馬路有很多大水窪，王大哥甫停車便走到車尾箱替我們搬行李，冷不防大風雨不斷經過車尾門打進車箱；碰巧有一輛汽車從後駛過大水窪，"Oh shit!"十分記得那男子的反應。 很努力地爬出民宿外找點吃的，但行不到兩個街口便被大風雨嚇得打道回府，結果民宿給我們的3張7-11（就在民宿地下，聽說其實是民宿主人... read more

When we got there we headed to the hotel that the travel info centre had booked for us. The offseason price of 800 NT dollars got us a really nice place on the main strip close to the beach with new furnishings, nice beds, and a big room. Since we didn't go to any of the islands we decided to stay in Kenting longer than we planned. The main strip of Kenting was full of tourist gift shops, clothing stores, street vendors and nicely kept resturants. Although we did not have much luck with food in Kenting, everything seemed to be over priced and not very fresh. I've never thought of going to Taiwan but this place has definitely captured my nerves ... I was caught by the sight in TV while a girl laid on the sofa as if she was a walking corpse ... the obstinacy has ruthlessly taken over her ... anyway, she found her happiness in Kenting and was moved by the place. I started to question whether Taiwan has such a heavenly place ... Thus, 2 devastating people started off the journey to the 'Paradise' which is believed to wash away your sorrow ...... read more
