Een prachtdag: geen regen, mooie wolken tegen een blauwe hemel en de temperatuur is boven de 30 graden. Het voelt aan alsof je in de sauna zit en dat is elke dag zo, zon of geen zon. Woensdagochtend: Een groot aantal van ons bezoekt het Boeddhistische tempelcomplex op 45 minuten van Kaohsiung. Stil worden we van de vele Boedha's, de talloze tempels en de bijzonder aardige en vrolijke Boedhistische nonnen. Een van hen heeft zelfs in Amsterdam gewoond. 's Middags is het dan zover: de finale van de mixed. De boten met mannen en vrouwen. Het weer werkt eindelijk mee, voor de toeschouwers dan, voor ons is het eigenlijk te heet. Vandaag hoeven we niet te varen, dus hebben we tijd om Taiwan te verkennen. Zoveel mensen, zoveel plannen. We vertellen hier de verhalen van vier groepjes. Een groepje gaat naar de hoofdstad Taipei, met de hoge snelheidslijn, gebouwd door Ballast Nedam. Een paar feiten: duur van de reis 1, 5uur, snelheid maximaal 290 km per uur. In Taipei bezoeken ze het Chang Kai Tsjek memorial en een Boeddhistische tempel waar zingend gebeden wordt. Een ander groepje gaat met de supermoderne metro en een oude stoptrein (drie kwartier) naar Tainan. Een stad zoals je je een Chinese stad voorstelt: met veel kleurige reclameborden, ontzettend veel scooters en overal kleine winkeltjes. Opvallend zijn de vele eettentjes op de overdekte stoepen. So I've been at my job for about a week and a half now and things are ok. However, at this rate, it's going to be a very long year. Overall my students are pretty well behaved considering they're about 7-12 years old. It is just a little annoying that none of them seem to really want to learn English. It seems a little cruel that they go to regular school and then their parents force them to come to English school after that. Some of my older students aren't finished until about 9:15 at night. If I were them, I would hate learning English too. So this morning I woke up and Marco (my friend and former student) picked me up to come and stay at his house. I'm definitely glad he came today- just realized that not all my bites were from mosquitoes... the hostel I was staying at had bed bugs! Anyway, I will be living with Marco and his mother (actually they have 2 apartments that are next to each other and I will be staying in the one nextdoor). They showed me around and then Marco and I went to have Italian food- I must admit I was happy to try something other than Chinese food. I've been in Kaohsiung for about 2 days now and I've been walking around the city, checking out what's around the love river, and hanging out at my friend's tea shop. I'm still feeling a bit jet lagged though. The other night I was reading and passed out around 7pm. When I woke up, I heard people talking and someone was getting out of the shower. So, I got ready to get up for the morning when I thought that maybe I should check to see what time it was... to my surprise, it was only 1am.
