Wednesday, 18th May 2011 After lunch today, we were off to Xiziwan (西子湾) MRT Station (on the tail of the orange metro line) for our onward journey to Cijin (旗津) Island. On our way to the ferry terminal, it was hard to miss the Mother of all ice shops, 海之冰. For this shop was regularly featured on many Taiwanese shows and highly recommended by our Taichung cabbie, Mr Zhou. As usual, like most places we visited in Kaohsiung, crowds were thin at 海之冰 and it was easy for us to locate a table. And as usual, with our "kiasu" mentally, we ordered a multi-flavoured (综合水果冰) fruit ice. For NT 180, the generous serving was large enough for our party of 4. My only gripe was that it would be perfect if the ice shavings were as ... read more

Wednesday, 18th May 2011 Start >> Central Park >> Kaohsiung 85 >> Kaohsiung History Museum >> Kaohsiung Film Archives >> Love River >> Love River Jetty >> Cijin Island >> Old Sze Chuan Restaurant >>End We started Day 5 of our > at Central Park, which was about 10 minutes walk from where we stayed. Effectively, this was a huge open space in the heart of downtown Kaohsiung where the urban spotlight is located. Central Park station was itself an attraction of its own flanked by tastefully decorated sunflowers at the entrances of the station. From the ticket office, we purchased our MRT Pass which gave us 2 days of unlimited travel on the Kaohsiung Metro. Opened in March 2008 to much fanfare, the slick system currently operated on 2 burgeoning lines with major int... read more

Tuesday, 17th May 2011 We decided to have an early lunch at Paper King (纸箱王) Restaurant before leaving Cing Jing even though our stomaches were still full from the heavy buffet breakfast this morning. The food offerings were limited and the pricing was somewhat expensive for Taiwanese standards. What made 纸箱王 stood out from the crop was that the furnishings and the cutleries used in the restaurant were made of paper products. This unique attraction was certainly a selling point on its own. By 12pm, our driver Mr Zhou had arrived to pick us up for our journey to the city of Kaohsiung, some 150km away. Certainly, I was going to miss my short stay in Cing Jing for its cool weather, the fresh mountain breeze as well as the comfy homestay experience. As we journeyed ... read more

(pronounced "shin yien qwhy lu")... or Happy Chinese New Year! Chinese New Year began on February 2nd and lasted for 2 weeks. All of the schools are off during this time, so most of the foreign teachers went on vacation. If I were to compare Chinese New Year with a holiday in the States, it would be like Thanksgiving (only without the football and with a whole lot of fireworks instead). It is also like Thanksgiving in that ticket prices to fly anywhere are super expensive. Because of this, I decided to stay in Kaohsiung for the holidays. I did some things in and around Kaoshiung... my sushi friends taught me how to roll my own vegetarian sushi and I went with Marco and several of his friends to an outlet mall called E DA. So, 6 months have come and gone and depending on how I look at it, sometimes it feels like I got here just yesterday while other times it feels like a lot longer than 6 months. I just realized that I haven't written a general entry about Taiwan and teaching here, so here's a little recap with a few random photos included... I was subbing in the morning at a kindergarten, although technically it's illegal. Most of the schools have it worked out with the cops and they usually call you and tell you not to come in the day of an inspection. It seemed very strange though, especially since one of the schools I worked at was literally down the street from the police station. I met a girl who worked at a kindergarten that ... read more

Sorry it has been a few months since I've blogged, but life in Kaohsiung has pretty much been same old same old with a few exceptions. Last month we celebrated the Moon Festival. This is a holiday that everyone has off from school and work and it is a day to have a bbq with family and friends, eat pomelos and look at the moon. That day there were many people lining the streets with their small grills barbecuing with co workers outside their shops and with family outside their apartment buildings. Since the holiday was on a Wednesday, Marco and his employees at the tea shop decided to have their barbecue on Tuesday after they had closed up the shop. That afternoon I decided to make a stop at Costco... big mistake. As soon as ... read more

So sorry it's been so long. I must admit that not much is new in Kaohsiung besides the fact that I quit my job and had my last day about a month ago. Now I am a full time sub for the school I was working for. The school had a 3 week vacation, however, there were 3 classes that stayed open because they started about 2 weeks before the break time and I think the school was afraid that the parents would just enroll their kids in another bushiban. Anyway, these kids were pretty dang cute, but with only 2 weeks of English under their belt, it was a little difficult to communicate with them. I think a lot of them didn't realize that I don't speak Chinese, so they'd come up to me and ... read more

So sorry everyone- I realize that it's been over a month since I've written... living in another country is definitely different from traveling around one, so it takes a bit longer to do enough blog worthy activities to warrant a post. Anyway, let me start by saying... I quit my job and it looks like everything is going to work out. When I told the owner dude that I didn't want to work there anymore, I concluded by telling him that if he ever needed a substitute to give me a call. That's when he offered me a position as a full time sub. Basically, the school is going to get me a working visa so I don't have to worry about my tourist visa expiring. Whenever they need a sub at any of their 6 ... read more
