I spent about 5 days in Shiacarl Guesthouse (aka ITH in English) during this Chinese New Year. The weather was great. Though it rained for a couple of days, it was sunny and warm most of the time, unlike wet and rainy Taipei. The laid-back lifestyle there is contagious. So I could totally relax and enjoy my short vacation. Well, it’s long history between me and Shiacarl/Green Island. Two summers ago, I had the chance to do help exchange with Shiacarl. When I first stepped out of the ferry, I felt like I was in Bali. People there have really dark skin due to long periods of time outside. And some of them holler at tourists for business. (Day 527 on the road) We hadn't initially considered going to Green Island, but with a recent Taifun wrecking havoc in many parts of southern Taiwan, our plan to visit Alishan needed to be adjusted. It was a mixed blessing: On the one hand Green Island was very beautiful, on the other hand Alishan boasts a narrow-gauge alpine railway and some grand mountain vistas. Anyway, the choice had been made for us, and Green Island it was. Those who know me won't believe this. I got behind the wheel of a motorized vehicle! I white knuckled it half way around the island to the local hot spring. One of only 3 in the world fed by the ocean. WOW! Wonderful!! I got back on the scooter and before I realized I was actually speeding! Now I wouldn't say it was so great 'I can't believe I've been missing this'. It was just the right tool for the job. Anywho...tonight a lovely dinner then tomorrow back on the vomit barge (oh ya...I didn't mention that part did I...thought I was going to die...best not talk about it!) and onto Kenting. I have had a request for a blog so here is my attempt. The past 2 weeks have gone by very fast and I am hoping the next 3 weeks go just as fast. Last weekend I went with my group of friends to Green Island for our long vacation weekend. It was the last time we were together as a group as Mary left on Friday to go back to the states. And let me mention that it is not the same her with out her. We spent hours every night talking about everything and nothing, we went on all of our trips together and we were there for each other through everything, the good and bad.
