The Sinhalese arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century B.C., probably from northern India. Buddhism was introduced beginning in about the mid-third century B.C., and a great civilization developed at the cities of Anuradhapura (kingdom from circa 200 B.C. to circa A.D. 1000) and Polonnaruwa (from about 1070 to 1200). In the 14th century, a south Indian dynasty seized power in the north and established a Tamil kingdom. Occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th century, the island was ceded to the British in 1796, became a crown colony in 1802, and was united under British rule by 1815. As Ceylon, it became independent in 1948; its name was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. Tensions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists erupted into war in 1983. Tens of thousands have died in an ethnic conflict that continues to fester. After two decades of fighting, the government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam formalized a cease-fire in February 2002, with Norway brokering peace negotiations. To be updated

In some places the waves were mysteriously selective. Two houses stand while the one between is gone. In other places entire neighborhoods have been erased. A wall stands here, a kitchen sink over there; a spiral staircase leads nowhere. And where have the former occupants gone? In Sri Lanka alone 40,000 stories ended terribly that day. In many cases even the people who might have been left behind to remember those stories were washed away too. Total erasure. The survivors occupy tents and temporary huts provided by Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, and others. What would it have be [View Full Entry]

I finished my lectures in Kandy, including my public lecture, which had to be rescheduled because no one showed up the first time. The only people who showed up the second time were students who were forced to come. Once upon a time something like that would have bothered me, but now I just shrug it off. To compensate, the director of the Institute arranged a little party for me at the faculty club, where we could avoid the alcohol ban imposed on Kandy during the week of the Perahera. Third World faculty clubs are my kind of scene: chalky, disillusioned [View Full Entry]

The night after my last entry I slept under a tattered web of fevered dreams. A hot coal burned in my stomach and I shook convulsively. Fortunately, I have been accepted as the fifth member of the Udugamma family, weird uncle Jon from California. I stay with them when I'm in Kandy. Ananda, the father, received his MD from UC Davis. He now has me on a course of antibiotics. My fever is gone but I haven't eaten anything except bananas for days. I made a noble effort to conduct my lectures, but with frequent bathroom breaks. +++++ Following my advice [View Full Entry]

Colombo-Kandy Railroad Haiku Rattling through jungles Heads bouncing like souvenir dolls Lost in sad thoughts +++++ I can feel the proximity of the jungle in Kandy. Monkeys scramble across my roof, the bird calls that wake me in the morning sound like auditions for a Tarzan movie, and there are columns of ants streaming across every wall. Even if Buddhists were allowed to use ant traps (and they aren't,) this isn't a problem you solve, it's a problem you learn to live with. In my last entry I asked Asia to swallow me whole. This turned out to be a lesson [View Full Entry]

The only surprise waiting for me in Colombo when I arrived was how routine it all seemed. Rukman's father, Mahinda, and his sister, Kanchana, were waiting for me as I cleared customs. On the way to their house Kanchana accidentally drove through an army checkpoint. I saw the sentry un-sling his rifle and point it at us. The thought of a bullet whistling through the passenger compartment gave me a weird thrill. Kanchana slammed on the breaks. She explained to the soldiers that she was a big attorney and there would be trouble if they detained us. They let us go. [View Full Entry]

After spending two and a half weeks in Delhi, describing Colombo as a ‘breath of fresh air’ is the very definition of an understatement …I’d go for a hurricane of rose scented rapture! Walking down Colombo’s main thoroughfare on a Sunday among the early afternoon promenade, dumbstruck by men and women openly holding hands and smiling. After spending the previous half-year amongst a billion of the most sexually repressed people on earth, this was a revelation - it's amazing how such a seemingly small concession to freedom can make people so relaxed and happy - en [View Full Entry]

1 Day in Columbo Asia » Sri Lanka
I will descripe my one day experience in Sri Lanka after leaving India on the way to Japan. It was a fantastic day as Brett and I were put up in a really nice hotel in Columbo and had all meals provided at a 5 star level. Brett and I were 2 out of about 25 guests staying at the hotel. The hotel has a capacity of 300. The Tsunami really shook up this small country and it was sad to see, but I wanted to maintain a postive focus the whole time I was there, so I smiled a lot [View Full Entry]

We have a confession to make, we thought Sri Lanka would be the perfect destination for a relaxing first few weeks on the beach, it has been...but it has also been so much more. History, religion, food, geography, people - each has surprised us and reinforced how much we underestimated this country. We spent a little over three weeks touring just the south west and central highlands. After an 18 hour journey from London via Singapore (don't ask, restrictions of a round the world ticket) we found ourselves in Colombo, then followed a hair-raising introduction to the ways of the Sri [View Full Entry]

First, a little background: Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is a small island off the southeast coast of India. Its people are mostly Buddhist, but also Hindu and Muslim; they mostly plant tea or make apparel to earn a living. The Singhalese, mostly Buddhist and the Tamils, mostly Hindu had been engaged on-and-off in a civil war until last year. During the conflict, the Tigers, a Tamil guerrilla group, perfected suicide bombings throughout Sri Lanka to carry out their fight for independence in Tamil-dominated areas of the island. Now, a cease-fire has been signed, and there is widespr [View Full Entry]

The kidnapping in Colombo !!!!! On the 1st of January 2003, I was driving back from Negombo to Colombo with my mum, sisters and Maggie amma (a person who was employed by my parents when my sister Imara was one month old in 1984). I am writing this on the 24th of December 2007 and she still lives with us, she has been promoted to our 2nd mother status long time ago hence all of us refer to her as “Amma”. At about 1am on the 2nd of Jan, I was on Baseline road near the Borella junction. I had just [View Full Entry]
