Sri-Lanka was a fun trip for us, even though it was short and sweet. We stayed in Beruwala. It is 2.5 hour drive from the city. We rented an apartment facing the beach side, which for us was a very simple paradise and not much to do but chill, hang out in the beach with cold beers, check out the turtle nesting ground and have curry for lunch and dinner. I wish we could have stayed longer with our friends, but there is always next time and this trip has given me more reasons to come back and explore Sri-Lanka. ... read more

It was the early hours when Angela and I arrived at Colombo International Airport. After clearing the pleasantly efficient customs control, we were bundled into a minivan for the two and a half hour journey to Beruwela, a beach resort south of the capital. As we drove through the near deserted suburbs of Colombo, our van suddenly pulled over to the side of the road. It was an army checkpoint. “Do not worry, This is normal,” said our driver as we came to a standstill. Outside, a uniformed man with a gun shone a torch into the minibus letting its light linger over us. Seemingly satisfied with what he saw, the guard waved us on. We drove off, heading south.
