We all ended up at Riddim Beach Bar for what can only be described as a random and very drunken beach party! (rather like that one Barney and I had been to years before!) Pictures will probably suffice.... read more

I was afraid Unawatuna would've changed into a mega-tourist resort since I last visited a couple of years ago. But luckily not! Compared to last time I was here there are quite a lot more beach bars, but it's still got the same laid back vibe I love so much. The beach boys are just as friendly and best of all, there aren't too many tourists! Strangely enough some people even remember me from a couple of years ago which is lovely! Today I met up with Rushan who Barney and I had hung around with when we were here on holiday before. Rushan works at Riddim Beach Bar where Barney and I had enjoyed a crazy beach party before! Rushan and I went out boating on the lake and later Rushan did his best to ... read more

I got up mega-early and went straight to the Emirates office to change my flight so I could at least stay an extra few weeks before figuring out what to do about job/ life dilemnas... Sadly the planes are full until the end of September. Humph! not only do I find this hard to believe but it also wreacs havoc with my latest plan to change the world by trying to become the BBC correspondent in Sri Lanka. There's only one answer at the moment a few days fun and then back to England to earn some dollars. So I stuff my backpack full and bind it shut and head for the train station to travel southwards down the coast to the beach resorts for a couple of days sun before my flight back in only ... read more

After enjoying the week of luxury with my parents we were back on the more bumpy road again starting with a 2 hour journey in a tuk tuk from Dambulla to Kandy in the midst of a rather large tropical storm, not something I would particularly reccommend to anyone but fun all the same! We spent a couple more days in The city of Kandy exploring the city centre and its attractions before heading into Sri Lanka's Hill Country, an area filled with tea fields british colonial buildings, waterfalls and lakes. Our first destination in the area was Nuwara Eliya and to reach the town we had to take a train for 4 hours. This train journey was in itself one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka trip, rolling through green tea fields, past raging ... read more

After an ordinary Emirates flight (other than wine at 09-15am!!) we are met at Colombo airport by Sanath our pre arranged Chauffeur-guide with car. We check in at Ranjit’s Ambalama Homestay in Torrington avenue, Cinnamon Gardens - basic & comfortable. Go to the Fort & Pettah areas to revisit M’s memories of his trips to SL 38 years ago. The area looks like a war zone with army blockades all over & guys with machine guns who look like they just left high school (is this a sign of age we wonder). Really disappointing - Colombo looks tired & worn out by the 25 year conflict. We couldn’t take pictures or get to Pettah, the famous old market place. Made do with a trip to the Galle Face Hotel for tea. Faded Colonial splendour & a ... read more

He guys, the elephants were definately worth it. They were fantastic! and we also saw lots of peacocks in trees, toucans (the most bizarre birds ever) , water buffalo, wild hogs and jackels. So all in all worth one night in a grubby hotel. we are now in Unawatuna, it is beautiful. Like a litle bit of paradise. our hotel room is also cool, it actually has part of the cliff face as one wall, you have to see it to believe it! going to Galle tomorrow for a little more history before coming back to Unawatuna for 3 days of sun and surf. Hope you are all ok gem... read more

FRENCH Unawatuna...
