Sunday 16 February, 2020, cont'd. We had a quiet afternoon. I did a little packing, as we are leaving in the morning. Lights out 10.00 pm. Monday 17 February, 2020. Today we transfer from Mirissa to Tissamaharama (known as Tissa). A reasonable night's sleep, stirred at 7.20 am. Down to breakfast and we actually managed to get some eggs, sausages, toast and coffee quickly from the younger lad who doesn't have a clue. Spotted the better English speaking guy and paid the bill. Told him we have a taxi booked. Back to the room, to shower and finish packing. Brought the cases down at 10.20 am and waited for our driver. Two German girls arrived and we talked with them. Car turned up at 10.50 am, a Toyota Prius and we loaded up and left. The ... read more

We left Ella for our next destination, Tissamaharama, early the next morning. Saman stopped at Rawana Ella Waterfall, 19 meters high and only 6 kilometres from Ella. We were driving along a winding road through Ella Gap and the scenery was stunning. We stopped briefly at the waterfall and joined a large group of orange clad monks on the bridge overlooking the falls. We left the hill country and were passing through flat farmlands before we arrived in the busy crossroads town of Wellawaya. A short detour here from the highway out of the town took us to Buduruwagala, an ancient Buddhist site dating from the 10th century. At this spot stands a 1000 year old standing Buddha statue (at 15 meters high it is the tallest on the island) which is carved into the rock ... read more

A breathtaking bus journey took us all the way from the highlands of tea country down to the tropical lowlands of Yala National Park. We stayed in a wonderful guest house just outside the town of Tissa. The staff could not do enough for us and we highly recommend staying at The River Front if you visit the area. From there we decided to walk in to Tissa to find somewhere to eat. Ignoring the recommendation of walking along the main road, we chose the minor road through the countryside. What a delight it was to walk next to the paddy fields and see all the wildlife there. Every Sri Lankan we met smiled and said hello, and they seemed so pleased to see foreigners walking off the beaten track. The town itself was nothing to ... read more

It's New Year's Eve and we are in the opposite direction from all of the parties! After our hiking trip and quick stop in Colombo, we returned to Weligama for a few days to unpack our backpacks, wash all our clothes, and pack up again. Our friends tried to convince us to stay on the coast until tomorrow so we could attend one of the many beach parties planned for tonight, but neither Matt nor I were interested in ringing in the new year at a noisy party. The railway tracks only go as far south as Matara, so we hired a van and driver to take us NE toward Tissamaharama which is the closest town to Yala National Park. Driving the coastal highway we passed a lot of little beach towns that looked irresistable and ... read more

After a week of walking beautiful beaches and trading our prairie winter anemic look in for a healthy bronze glow, we felt rested and ready to move on to another theme in this country: discovering its abundant wildlife. So we said goodbye to the lovely Sri Lankan family who ran our guest house, all of whom came out to see us off, and made our way to the town of Tissaharamaya and Yala National Park, Sri Lanka's largest wildlife sanctuary. Once we were set up at our guest house in Tissa we hired a tuk tuk driver to tour the town and its areas of interest. He drove us by a two thousand year old Buddhist stuppa; around Tissa's four lovely lily pad decorated lakes; stopped to check out a huge gathering of large bats hanging ... read more

After a week at the rescue centre and our first taste of cricket, already taken with Sri Lanka we were keen to move on to see other parts of the island. We negotiated a lift with the driver and van that had taken us to Colombo and planned to take a route along the coast up to Tissamaharama. Mark had identified our most luxurious accomodation to date which also included a bit of air-con and cable TV.... which of course showed the cricket. We took in a number of recommended sites on the way. The first stop was at Mirissa, despite lashing rain we could still see it was a beautiful sandy beach and bay, well worth spending some time in during hotter weather. Taking in an obligatory temple a fascinating underground Buddhist enclave with literally ... read more

After a couple of days in the Nuwera Eliya area we are headed down the hill country but it will take awhile as we get lost trying to navigate the confusing small roads out of the mountains, we found ourselves on the other side of the hill and we have to backtrack cause Mr. T just missed a turn. Anyway back to the hot humid weather again and we stopped at the foot of the hills for lunch and then moved on to visit some ancient carvings on this massive rocks the name of the place is Budurawagala. it's a set of sculptures done 1,000 years or so at the rock face, i think it's Buddha and other divinities, it would have been nice to stroll at leisure around the area which comprises of huge boulders ... read more
