Chusok is the name for Korea's version of Thanksgiving Holidays. This year we apparently lucked out as to what days the holiday fell on because we only had to work the Monday of the week!!! The Tuesday was National Foundation Day (October 3rd) - separate from Chusok, but nonetheless it was still a day off! Chusok day is actually the 6th, but the 5th and 7th are also holidays. The idea is to allow people enough time off work so that they can go back to their hometowns and spend time with family and also visit the grave sites of ancestors. As a result, most large cities become deserted and highways are rammed with carloads of families traveling to their hometown. During the Monday of this week all the kindergarten children came to school dressed ... read more

What I really needed was a little traditional Korean spontenaity. That is exactly what I got. My role that day was to be tour guide...bring the new guys to the oh-so-wonderful Emart for a shopping spree. But I really wanted to wander around Seoul, really really badly, that afternoon. Afterall, Emart isn't going anywhere. And it is local, only a short jaunt down the road...that can be accomplished anytime. Anyway, I knew the boys would be in for a little sightseeing. Who wouldn't be, it's Insadong...and it was an amazingly beautiful day. No day to be fighting the bargainhunter crowds, no sir. So we hopped on a bus and meandered our way down Jogno to the far end of Insadong strip. There was absolutely no expectations, no plans, just an afternoon of freedom. So we did ... read more

Kovats and I had really wanted to check out a mall that sells strictly electronic equipment. Being in Asia, my visions of an electronics store would be one that carries the latest, biggest (memory wise), fastest, smallest pieces of electronic equipment ever made. This was not too far from the truth. We had two options; we could either go to Technomart or Yongsan Electronics Market. Both are well known. Technomart is a 10 story building that has numerous different booths setup on each floor catering to certain electronic needs. Whereas Yongsan Electronics Market is spread out in 20 different buildings, of which 2 buildings are 5 stories tall. Yongsan is known as the largest shopping area in Asia for electronics. Wow. Anyways, in the end we decided to make the trek to Technomart. We’ll save Yongsan ... read more

So I finally got my camera working! I mentionned that last week Will, Joy and I went to Taejondae. Taejondae is on the coast and is full of cliffs and interesting rocky outcrops that really give it it's beauty. It kind of reminded me of the scenery in Corfu- mountains jutting into the sea scattered with dark green foliage and trees. It was so wonderful to be out of the city- I hadn't seen green for 3 weeks so to be by the sea with fresh air and good company was really the tonic I was looking for. The best thing about Busan is the fact that the coast is so close- it only takes 10 minutes by car to get to Taejondae and probably 20 minutes by bus. Here are some pics to tickle your ... read more

One of my favorite things to do in Korea (or anywhere else in the world for that matter) is eat out. It is especially fun here because the restaurant per capita statistics are roughly the same as the sheep population of New Zealand (two for every man, woman and child). It’s a wonder any of them stay open, but with constant renovations, really, really big neon signs, plastic emulations of their dishes in a glass display case or massive pictures of cooked food, the restaurateurs persevere in Korea’s saturated market. The best thing about eating out in Korea is that they fill the table. Every square inch of the table is covered with a bowl of food or a glass. For those who like order (or those who are claustrophobic eaters) this may not be ... read more

We've been here a month now...first impressions...ok...I'm definitely not going to lie when I say there were more things that made our eyes pop out than I could remember. We were constantly comparing things to what we knew and either making the weirdest face, laughing and/or taking a picture. I'm an honest person so everything from this point on might be a little biased from my point of view...consider this your warning.... I know that sounds mean, but let me tell you......if you heard a little dink-dink-dink-dink behind you, turning around only to discover its a korean girl on her 4 inch or so toothpick high heels running full speed down the sidewalk. Assembling the blur together into a stick figure with zebra spandex capri-ish pants, puke green shorts/overalls, a bright pink shirt-thing underneath and a ... read more

Not only am I learning loads about Korean culture but also, from hanging around with English speakers from other countries, I'm also finding out what it is that makes me English. I went umbrella shopping the other day (honestly, Korea has cornered the market in funky umbrellas- they're so cute!). I picked out my umbrella and the guy, casually as you like, went to open it. Inside my head there came an unexpected 'nooooo bad luck!' so loud I thought I might have said it. I mean come on, I don't really believe opening umbrellas indoors brings bad luck- do I!? Plus we English are so bloody polite! My co-worker Will is Canadian and obviously hasn't had his p's and q's drilled into him like I have- I'll give him a sweet and he'll just take it. ... read more

.....but at least they still get me there in the end! I really feel like I'm starting to settle in now, the initail anxiety has gone and I'm actually beginning to feel rather at home. Last weekend was really fab, got appropriately leathered on Friday night, lost my wallet and broke my English phone but a good time was still had. Over here they're crazy about 'noraebang' which are like karaoke singing rooms. You go in with your mates, get shown to a room, drink as much as you like and try not to shatter the glass with your ear piercing attempts at singing. If you're a good singer I can imagine the Koreans love it (they just looked at me rather pitifully) but lots of girls in my class, when asked about their ideal man, ... read more

Well, there's 20 days until our contract is up here in Daegu, South Korea. Thanks to Travel Blog's Bloggers I feel at ease travelling into Bangkok. I was a little worried watching the news about the coup that moved into Bangkok last week. But after I posted my concerns on the forum here and received many replies from other travellers already in Bangkok, I feel safe and at ease. Thanks to all you who replied!! This past Saturday Brendan and I were judges at our schools Speech contest. Our Ding Ding Dang school is part of a branch of 4 other schools. We were asked by the School's President, David Wi, to be the two foreign judges at the 2nd Annual Speech contest. We were quite happy to accept. There were 38 students in total with ... read more
