Leaving Getting my visa, selling my car, packing and booking a flight to SK all happened in a week. Needless to say, it was hectic. I was left with surprisingly little information about my work and accomodation; they just basically said "fly over and we'll have a caravan pick you up." Hey thanks guys, I appreciate the detail when you consider the length of time I plan to stay here. *** The Un-Hawaii Weather When I first got of the airport, it was probably around 50 degrees F. Being that the airplane and airport were controlled environments (i.e. warm as hell), I didn't mind it when I first stepped outside at 6PM with only 3 layers of clothes. I exhaled and was greeted by the unfamiliar sight of my breath. The driver offered me a cigarette... ... read more

As most of you know, I celebrated my 23rd birthday on Friday in South Korea! Wow, I could not have asked for a better day. It truly was a great time. I got to school and was wished a great day by all of my staff. The parents of my students brought me in presents ranging from 6 free movie tickets to the theater in Suji, an awesome birthday cake from a bakery nearby, chanel lipstick, lotion, ect, ect...and my kids all made me birthday cards during "play time"...too cute! The last half of the afternoon consisted of us eating cake and I bought pizzas for the kids-not just b/c it was my birthday but b/c we had just had Festival the day before (hence why all the kids are in the oddest looking outfits ever ... read more

Last month was one of the most intense months since I’ve been in Korea. I was in Yongin for winter camp with about 170 little kids. It was crazy. I arrived at camp at the beginning of the month and the kids came right after. The kids arrived with their parents with a red carpet for them to walk down with the teachers on each side clapping and welcoming them. Man, it was pretty Korean. That day the students had a welcome ceremony where they had to walk through a balloon arch to leave the “Korean Zone” and enter the “English Only Zone”. The students were at camp for four weeks and expected to speak only English for the full four weeks. At camp the students had a sticker system; they got stickers if they did ... read more

I have been here a month! It truly is hard to believe that the time has gone by that fast! If the entire year goes by that fast I will be home in no time. So much has happened in my life in a month. I have moved across the world, live by myself, have a job I never thought I would, and have had to start over making friends on my own. All things have worked out better than expected though! The weather is warming up here which is great. It is in the mid 40's for highs- it makes it a lot easier to walk places- that way and I wont' be spending as much money on taxis. This weekend I didn't do a whole lot but relax. I wasn't able to go on ... read more

I realize that I haven't written in a very very long time, but honestly not much has been happening. I've been working a lot and not doing a whole whole lot on the weekends because i'm generally too tired after a week with 41 kids. I've made a few good friends here now though so i'm feel a lot better about being here. Last Saturday I started losing my voice and yesterday when I woke up I basically couldn't talk. Today the owner of the school took me to an E.N.T (yes that's right, I just walked into an ENT's office without needing to wait like 6 months to see one) and after he shoved a very uncomfortable camera down my throat he told me that I have a swollen larynx and put me on bedrest ... read more

So I FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! have my internet! It's FANTASTIC! It's nice to be able to read about home whenever I want. The other day while I was in Seoul and picked up one of the English papers called The Korean Times, I mean from the name you'd think it'd be a pretty decent paper. I was sooooooo wrong, it was horrible. It essentially had the same story printed on every page and the only other country it had anything written about was the US. Now i'm quite excited that i'll be able to read my Canadian morning paper during coffee in the morning. I've sort of come to terms with me being in Korea now, I would go as far as to say that I love it here, but I certainly don't get up every morning convincing ... read more

So i've been here now for two weeks and one day and my opinion of the place still hasn't changed much. I suppose that it doesn't help when it seems like all I do is eat and sleep. I've talked to a few other teachers from other schools in other area's and they really don't seem to be running into as many working hours as I have to put it. I mean really, it's bad enough that I have to work tuesday - saturday, but honestly is there any reason that I should need to be there till almost 7 pm on a saturday night and then have to call the owner of the school because they have locked me out of downstairs where my shoes are? I get that the school is brand new ... read more

Hey Everyone! Just wanted to let you all know that I have arrived in Korea, i've been here for about a week and a half so far. When I first arrived, my ankles were swollen from not drinking enough water and walking around enough on the plane but they did go back to normal after a couple of days. I haven't really had much of an opportunity to search around Yongin yet as we've been really busy with school. That is going ok, but I feel that it could be going a lot better. I have not fallen in love with Korea in the least and am really home sick right now. As it looks right now, i'm really truely honestly considering ending my contract after 6 months. Unless there are some drastic changes I should ... read more

Well it doesn't really seem like Halloween here, just another day of coaster work, cafeteria food and crash. Up here at Home Bridge hostel there's no kids running around or candy given out. I don't know how the Korean people celebrate it. It's abig deal at Everland though, with the floats and parades and costumes. The weather is definitely getting cooler though and the trees have changed color, so it's really pretty in the hills around the Park. It's overcast today with light rain down south. Might be time to start breaking out the light long underwear. It's probably a good thing we're doing trackwork right now instead of hanging and banging, raising bents. ... read more
