the glitter is the epitomy of Korean nightlife in the later hours, but I only had the camera in the waking hours
I woke up this morning with a pounding head and a ridiculously sore back. Too much time lying down on my cement slab Korean style mattress. Wow, a concrete pillow? Sounds like an adventure!
Heated pad on the bed is a nice touch when you come in from the Siberian air. 5 seconds later you think you have come down with Avian Flu- pouring sweat...(not like Pocari Sweat, but close). At least the hagnover is gone. Nothing like bacon and eggs, a hockey game, and a big jug of the hair of the dog to chase those drunken barking bleeding memories away. That and about 20 hours of movie time in our tiny Motel room.

Needless to say I am quite impressed we had to motivation to breeze out of Itaewon the way we did. Jen picked a direction, I picked a city- hopped on a bus and herre we are- Daejeon. Though it is cluttered just like Seoul, and you can't really see anty break in the smog just like Seoul, it is already a relief to be "out of the city" for awhile. That city just about killed me- well, just about took a limb anyway.

hiked our asses from the train station to the other end of the city- the "Motel District". Lonely Planet guide in hand we went parolling the streets for a Motel mentioned in the book. We didn't find it (maybe everyone is right about these damn books), but we did find about 500 other motels to choose from. We settled on Ensemble Motel. 35 bucks a nights (due to our lack of Korean vocab, it is impossible to know whether we misunderstoof the initial suggestion of 50 bucks a night, or our immaculate bargaining skills earned us a steal of a deal.....though I put my oney on the latter). Computer, spacious, big screem, couch, mammoth bathroom, room with a view- No Complaints (it is nice not to have anything to complain about- negative nancy that I am).

Shawna Manske
Good ol' Canadian (Okotokian) girl...done a degree, done the bar slinging bit. Sometimes a girl dreams of becoming something else, seeing ANYTHING else, other than the familiar. Or dreams of finding the familiar somewhere alien. I'm doing the foreign teaching thing in Korea for a change of pace. Plan is to "see the world" after that. I want something.... I realize it's easy to say "I want to change the world", so I would rather say that I want to just follow whatever path is possible to make somebody's life better, somehow. And let's be honest, no one forsakes the comforts of home without look... full info

Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a...more info

Our street

Seems romantic now...the windy, tiny streets, the way the cars park halfway inside the front door for lack of a better spot, the fact that there is furniture "dumped" outside every door, waiting for English locals to steal it. I'm sure the romance will wear off eventually

It was....quaint.....despite the staircase slash complete vertical climb to our tiny ass room.Funny thing is that there are all kinds of motels in Itaewon at around the same price. I'm glad we got the experience

Ever feel like you have to sneeze really bad and it never comes? Yeah well, this is me, having a glass of Yellow Tail (my fav) in the airport in Seoul, intending to fly to the Philippines in an hour or two....turns out we never get on the plane as apparently we will lose our teaching visas, contracts, jobs, excuse to be on the other side of the world. This is my naive face. Little do I know I will spend another several days chasing down paperwork.
