Having been here two months (seriously?!), I've started to get used to all the crazy things that make this country so different, and some of the novelty of being in Asia has started to wear off. But every once in a while - like when I'm walking through an open market that is PACKED with people, where stands with squid-on-ice sit next to entire headless pigs roasting on spits, and people with the strangest make up I've ever seen do tricks to terrifying music - it is overwhelmingly clear that I am on the other side of the world. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'd be lying if I said Suwon was a particularly nice or pretty city - it's too crowded for me and litter control is seriously lacking in some parts - but ... read more

* Said TWO students to me this week, each in a different class. Can I help it if the easiest way to explain some Vocab words is to draw them? Can I help it if I don't have enough time to make perfect likenesses? I cannot. Classes are getting better. I'm starting to feel out that balance between fun and work where you can joke around with your students without them demolishing the building. It's nice. The great thing about teaching English as a foreign language is that any conversation, no matter how off-topic, helps students practice their speaking skills. So what if we were talking about human/dolphin reincarnation rather than the chapter of the book we were reading? So what if they were explaining some of the quirks of Korean Middle Schools? I was speaking, ... read more

I wish I could say that I had more interesting stories to tell about my seven weeks in Korea, but life has stagnated. I have had no social life for awhile now, and in a place so far from home, a week can feel like an eternity. My last week or two have been spent in relative isolation. I have no life right now outside my job. The nights drag on. The days fly by. My time here makes me think of a big block of ice. It melts slowly. There is still such a long way to go. So much time. I am sick for my home. I miss Seattle. I think of all the things I love about it. All the places I want to go. All the things that I miss. The people ... read more

Wow, what a day. What a week! Between trying to make up study guides and trying to evaluate students after only two weeks of teaching, this week has been very busy. I usually get off at 9, but today it was 10:45. I was doing student evaluations. I feel guilty because my plan was to go into work early in order to work on them before school, but when I woke up this morning I decided I really didn't want to. I was actually ten minutes late to work. When I finished my student evaluations, which were mostly, let's face it, generic and contrived, I realized that Rina (my boss' wife) and her son Paul, and her niece were all waiting for me so that they could leave. I still feel awful about that. It rained ... read more

School has been an adjustment so far. I think I came into it with different expectations. I was expecting an experience more similar to the one I had in China. After all, they couldn't be that different, right? Wrong. I don't know if it was because of my short stay in China or if there really is a very marked difference in the behavior between kids in China and kids in Korea. I hate to say it, but when I was in China, the kids were SO sweet, I visited a school and they just flocked around and gave me all sorts of snacks, in Korea, I have to fight sometimes to get their attention. It's not to say that they can't be sweet, but really, it feels more like I'm teaching American kids sometimes for ... read more

I know it's silly, but I feel as though today was my actual first day in South Korea. I say this because it was the first full day that I had internet at my apartment. It was the first day I went to Seoul. It was the first day that I realized I could get comfortable in my classes and be a good teacher. It was my first solo walk home, and I didn't get lost. I would rather claim today as my first day than the others. I'm not saying that the four other days I have been here were bad. they've been really good. Everyone here has been so nice. I just have had the feeling of being in Korea much longer than I actually have been. Because of that, I have been hard ... read more

2 months later and here you have it, my latest update. I keep telling myself I should update more often but my life here is pretty normal so it never seems like I have much to say. In between my last update and May 2nd not too much happened. Lots of BBQ's and baseball games. Hanging out with friends in the park and having a great time. May 2nd to May 14th were pretty action packed since that was when my parents came to visit! It was such a great time. I had the Friday off work to go pick them up at the airport. I was waiting forever for them to come out but every once and a while someone would open the door to walk out and I would see my dad's balding head ... read more

Spring is generally my favorite season and it is in full force here in Seoul. We are finally coming out of the cold days of grey skies and uncomfortable wind. We haven't gotten to the rainy, sultry days of summer. The sun is shinning and last week the whole city was white with cherry blossoms. At times, it looked like it was snowing cherry blossom petals. Absolutely lovely! I took a hike in Suwon (a town just south of Seoul). There is an old fortress there built in the 1700’s that has a lovely walking course on the walls. There is beautiful scenery and the cherry blossoms abound. What a nice time to be in Korea! This week all the cherry blossoms have already fallen and the trees are finally showing their greenery. Soon the skies ... read more

Gwang-gyo mountain is famous to the people in Suwon. This mountain have a lot of mountain valley and hiking courses. Early in the morning scene of mountain was very silence. Weather was not rainy but the sky was gray. And the mountain was coverd with fog. But the air of morning was fresh and cool. Beginning of the hiking course, there was some spring flower. Yellow forsythia flower was very beatiful. In Korea the forsythia is the symbol of the spring. Also there was a lot of pine tree. The tree in this place is not thick. But they are grow high. Ground of hiking courses are coverd with some pine needles. So step was quite comfort. Middle of hiking you can meet sporting equipment. May be there were some aged people. They have light exercise ... read more

Not too much new to report, I mainly just wanted to post a whole bunch of pictures that I've taken with my new camera (which I love!!) There are loads of settings on it but all the directions are in Korean so I've been fooling around with it trying to figure things out. Sure I could look up everything I need to know on the internet, but thats just not as fun. Two weekends ago a few of us went hiking with a Korean hiking group. It was really great. Talk about hardcore hikers though. No such thing as stopping to enjoy the scenery, lets just race up the mountain. Needless to say we were one of the last few people to finish the hike. I 'm going to say its because we stopped to look ... read more
