Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

Well, there's certainly no good time for a death in the family, but as far as bad times go, I think we've hit the nail on the head. I just recieved the email from my mother confirming that her father, my granddad, died at 3:10am Eastern Daylight savings Time. He just stopped breathing. According to the earlier message I got from my mum today, it was common knowledge in the family and with the hospital that he wouldn't live through the week. He was on morphine every four hours and in a state of semi-coma most of the time. In that [View Full Entry]

Or maybe "Korea-Are we really liberated in Liberation Day?" by Charlie August 15, 2005 - Liberation Day Original story with many photos and links - http://ajarncharlie.livejournal.com/7772.html 60 years later, what price prosperity? Is South Korea on a tightrope? Today is South Korean 'Liberation Day' and feeling rather 'liberated' (as it is a holiday), I am sitting here scanning the headline news articles of Today's 'Korea Herald'. On the front page however I see the headline, '4.2 Mil. Pardoned on Liberation Day'. Huhh? I thought this was South Korea, not the north. How in the [View Full Entry]

Well, it began around 2:00 or so with so much food. Kim was cooking up a storm all day!!!!!!!!!! Spinach dip , egg plant, salsa, salad, lasagna, garlic bread. We had it all. Lots of drinks to boot. Appartantly , I say about and out funny. Anyway , we hung out, tried to stay cool, yeah right. We played a hilarious game of balderdash. Best of all I got to see my old friend James aka EMAJ from Brock University. I would have to say the worst part was sleepingin my room last night after 11 people squished in it ot [View Full Entry]

Jess and I had the lovely experience this morning of being further processed by the Korean government when we visited the Seoul Immigration Office. The purpose of this visit was to apply for our Resident Alien cards and multiple entry visas. The school seems to be paying for the alien card, but the re-entry visa is our expense. W50,000 for christ's sake. As I understand it, it's just a cash grab. It just allows you to leave the country and come back multiple times without losing your E-2 visa status. It seems like a silly expense at this point since we [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone. I finally have a chance to post some pictures and write an entry. I have been so busy with the new job and learning to get around but mostly partying! Here are some pictures of us (the new teacher from Arizona, Vania from New Zealand and me eating at the Outback restaurant. I had a little incident inside the washroom at the Outback because as you can see there are many buttons. If you push one, water comes shooting out of the toliet! Two American girls who were trying to help me figure out how to flush the toliet, [View Full Entry]

It's Tuesday! Asia » South Korea » Seoul
It's around quarter to three on Tuesday, and I'm sitting here at the office having completed the bulk of my Saturday planning. I have to do my Saturday planning well ahead of time because on Thursday night I've agreed to do some computer work for one of my co-workers at her house, and on Friday Jess and I will be off to Osaka to (finally!) get our work permits. Hello E-2 visa. You've only been a month in the waiting. Otherwise, things haven't been extremely exciting for the last few days. Business as usual, as it were, for the most part. [View Full Entry]

So, it's Been a Month Asia » South Korea » Seoul
We arrived on this sweaty rock 31 days ago today. The driving rain and thick humidity as we departed Incheon International airport made it impossible to even take in the scenery around us. A vague outline of a mountain here, crossing a bridge there. . . Until I awoke from a short nap to find us in the midst of a flourescent concrete jungle. We were dropped off at the Koreana hotel in Gwanghwamun with the instructions to be ready to meet the school's director at 9am the following morning. Since then, we've attended meetings and seminars, taught three and a [View Full Entry]
