Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

Seoul, South Korea: Sept. 24 We survived the dreaded 12 hour flight to Seoul, leaving at 1 am Saturday and arriving at 5 am Sunday. Somewhere in the air we skipped a day which is somewhat disturbing how suddenly you just lose a day in your life. I don’t even like how they change an hour in daylight savings time. Not so important to someone like me but I can imagine how it would kill business types whose mantra is time is money. 24 hours would be a lot of money. On the way back, we’ll get to relive the [View Full Entry]

Well not really, we're really doing a bit of Seoul searching more than anything else............. Meanwhile back at the ranch............. So Seoul huh, that'll shock your system, for sure (as my new dutch mate says, all the time. I dinnae ken his name so I just call him 'Dutch Guy', he doesn't seem to mind). We were speaking to some dude in Australia about Korea, he said he went to Seoul and lasted a day before getting the first flight out, his reason was that it was dead big and busy and noisy and polluted and that but we though that [View Full Entry]

Sleepless in Seoul Asia » South Korea » Seoul
After waiting at the Inchon airport for 45 minutes wondering if our school got the message that we were arriving, the director of our school eventually showed up. The drive into Seoul was a blur. Colin made what chit chat he could with Mr.Kim and I couldn't keep my eyes open despite all the new stimuli out the window. Hello jet lag. We stopped at our school for a few moments before Mr. Kim took us to our new home. Upon arrival, we were pleased with the size of the apartment yet digusted by how dirty it was. These are intial [View Full Entry]

Chuseok Asia » South Korea » Seoul
This past weekend was Chuseok, the Korean version of thanksgiving. Normally it's a few days from what I understand, but this year, only Saturday to Monday were days off. Since I don't work Fridays, however, I was able to enjoy a four day weekend, which was quite nice. On Friday, Jess worked to cover one of our co-workers who was taking a personal day of leave for a presumably personal reason. I kind of hung around the house, and cleaned up, went food shopping and waited for Jess to get home. She arrived, and after relaxing for a bit, we got [View Full Entry]

We have already described our 3 day stop over in Vancouver in some of our emails, so we won't go into great detail here. We arrived on a Satuday...picked up our processed visas at 5:40pm..or so..and by 6:00pm had purchased two one way tickets for Seoul, South Korea. Vancouver was sunny, warm and beautiful. We stayed right downtown in the most gorgeous condo ever (huge thanks to Doug and Paul). We were minutes from the water, the cool shopping of Robson St., and over 480 Starbucks'. colin [View Full Entry]

Welcome to the island of Wonder, Ulleungdo! , Yes it was. What a change from Seoul. Ulleungdo is known for it's delicious cuisine, including cuttlefish, fresh greens, pumpkin taffy, and medicinal beef. It has an ocean climate. It has an abudance of juniper, water, wind, and stone. We started out friday at 11:30 pm for a 5 hour bus ride . We arrived to watch the sunset (see pics) Wow, lots of Canadians on the tour well actually a lot of foriegners all in one place together! We took the ferry about 2.5 hours right over to the ulleungdo island itself. [View Full Entry]

Laziness! Asia » South Korea » Seoul
So yeah, I've been lazy. Well, that's not the whole excuse, really. It started kinda when grandad died. I took a day off work to collect my head, and then of course it was the last week of the semester, so I was doing tests and report cards and stuff. Then we had a few days off, so let's start there. Jess and I found our way down to the Express Bus Terminal in Seoul on August 27th. I'd been feeling really sick since the day before, which I attributed to a combination of heavy drinking on Thursday night and some [View Full Entry]

Well, a fun but crazy weekend! Laura and Vania had their last big going away party. Laura leaves for China on Thursday and Vania for New Zealand. The teachers got together on Friday night. On Saturday, we went to Carne Station for a big meal and drinks. They have so much food, which you can cook at your own table. Check out the pics! All you can eat and drink for 20.00! We ended being one of the last tables to leave after Kim decided to start playing drinking games "duckie f*&^" . Then Kim and Vania were doing beer and [View Full Entry]

Shopping Weekend Asia » South Korea » Seoul
This weekend turned out to be a crazy weekend of shopping. We were shopping on Friday at the Dongdaemun Market after work until 1:30, this huge late night market with lots of knock off stuff. I found size 9 shoes!. All day on Saturday we shopped at a more traditonal market with really neat clothes, foods and pottery. We bought so much jewerley between the three of us. Of course, we went back late Saturday afternoon to get prepared for a late Saturday night party! Kim made dinner again, chicken and pasta. A couple of people met at our apartment and [View Full Entry]
