Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

Week 2 of work. Asia » South Korea » Seoul
In our second week we took our Kindergarden students on an excursion to a huge park where we took in an animal show with monkeys and seals doing tricks. Actually, it was quite sad how much the 'monkey show' mirrored our jobs as Kindergarden teachers. The nightlife pics come from a Saturday night outing. We'll go on a sort of "Hoff" crawl trying to take in 4-5 different places in an evening. At each you order a beer...and a little food (ordering food is expected...a sort of cover charge). It's totally normal to see 6 or 7 bars/ hoffs/ "whiskeys" stacked [View Full Entry]

Well I accepted an invitation to the military ball here in Seoul Korea. 1941-2005. 14th Anniversary Miliary Police Ball (I thought Marilyn would be pleased) Anyway , it was an interesting experience. I bought a beautiful dress here - dark brown with sparkles around the edges, thin straps. My friend kim picked out the rest for me. It fit so well. It took place at Hyatt Hotel here - IT is nicer than HOME! There were many people there. I got to eat Western food!!!!!!!! Smoked salmon salad, beef- YUM! wine, and dessert. There was traditional entertainment from Korean women dancing [View Full Entry]

Autumn Asia » South Korea » Seoul
Well, autumn is slowly beginning to settle over the Korean peninsula resulting in evening temperatures reaching as low as 10c sometimes. Those of you reading from Ontario are probably scoffing at this, as I understand the weather there has been rather on the miserable side for the last couple of weeks. Not in Seoul, however. The average daytime high temperature is still around 20 or 22 degrees celcius. For example, the Yonhap news service website tells me that today, Seoul is set to enjoy a mostly sunny day with a high of 24c and a low tonight of 13c. Tomorrow, the [View Full Entry]

Every weekend is like another mini holiday over here and we haven't even left Seoul yet. There is so much to see and do in this city...it's exciting. We usually start off our Saturdays with some sort of plan for where we'd like to go and then five hours later we arrive back at home exhausted and more impressed with what this city has to offer. Below are some random pics of things we've seen. We went on an easy hike to see Seoul's most famous shamanist shrine, some Buddhist temples, and part of Seoul's fortress wall. It was a nice [View Full Entry]

We went to the Canadian Thanksgiving dinner in Seoul at the Hilton hotel put on by C. Chamber of Commerce. It was amazing in terms of the food and hospitality. Lots of great people there from all over Canada. We met a great group of people from the east coast (yeah I know they're great) We had a great Western dinner and had a late night out with our new friends. We might attend the Christmas one in December. I missed my mom's turkey dinner! [View Full Entry]

Soccer match Asia » South Korea » Seoul
On our first weekend (it was a long weekend) we went with our new friends Dave (Brit) and Emily (American) to an F.C. Seoul match. It was pretty cool. The world cup stadium holds 65 thousand, but only 20-25 thousand attend the games. They were an extremely rowdy bunch, singing the entire game. There was a little hike outside the stadium that allowed for a few pictures of the west end of the city. colin [View Full Entry]

Asia at last Asia » South Korea » Seoul
Seoul, South Korea: Sept. 24 We survived the dreaded 12 hour flight to Seoul, leaving at 1 am Saturday and arriving at 5 am Sunday. Somewhere in the air we skipped a day which is somewhat disturbing how suddenly you just lose a day in your life. I don’t even like how they change an hour in daylight savings time. Not so important to someone like me but I can imagine how it would kill business types whose mantra is time is money. 24 hours would be a lot of money. On the way back, we’ll get to relive the [View Full Entry]

Well not really, we're really doing a bit of Seoul searching more than anything else............. Meanwhile back at the ranch............. So Seoul huh, that'll shock your system, for sure (as my new dutch mate says, all the time. I dinnae ken his name so I just call him 'Dutch Guy', he doesn't seem to mind). We were speaking to some dude in Australia about Korea, he said he went to Seoul and lasted a day before getting the first flight out, his reason was that it was dead big and busy and noisy and polluted and that but we though that [View Full Entry]

Sleepless in Seoul Asia » South Korea » Seoul
After waiting at the Inchon airport for 45 minutes wondering if our school got the message that we were arriving, the director of our school eventually showed up. The drive into Seoul was a blur. Colin made what chit chat he could with Mr.Kim and I couldn't keep my eyes open despite all the new stimuli out the window. Hello jet lag. We stopped at our school for a few moments before Mr. Kim took us to our new home. Upon arrival, we were pleased with the size of the apartment yet digusted by how dirty it was. These are intial [View Full Entry]
