Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

Brr it is Cold in Seoul Asia » South Korea » Seoul
31 March 2006 Brrr it’s cold in Seoul! But I must say that the two days in Seoul have been more interesting and more fun than I had anticipated. We landed at the airport at 6:30 pm, went through customs and immigration with no problem, but then had to wait 30 minutes for our shuttle bus (called a deluxe limo there). It then took us 90 minutes to get to the Holiday Inn. When we arrived and told them how long it had taken, the response was: “well that’s Seoul for you”! The Holiday Inn was beautiful - the most beautiful [View Full Entry]

As we come to the end of an era... here is the final bowel shaking update to our already laxative blog. There's been thrills and spills... mostly spills... to be had by all. We've met and outdrank most of our friends... teachers... associates... and those we didn't know previously... moved house and cooked for ourselves for the first time since our arrival (we actually have cooking equipment now). We've been to the Korean equivelent of a hot spring, been around to various cities, had our graduation ceremony, sucked liquids that many would consider impossible to drink... consumed things which b [View Full Entry]

St. Patty's Day, etc Asia » South Korea » Seoul
Well, we had an exciting St. Patty's Day...not really. We all hung out at the Dublin Bar in Seoullung and had a few drinks. Claire and I left at like 12:30 or some insanely early hour like that....but we had a big day planned for Saturday, so thats okay. Saturday we spent the whole day in Seoul and hit all the major shopiing places. Claire bought a wig and we got chased by some crazy old lady (an ajuma)...meaning an old lady in Korean. See Claire was trying in a wig and after about 3 wigs, the lady got kind of [View Full Entry]

Amazing that a culture so vibrant with energy, metropolitan cognition, and a sense of humour, has such a stifled sense of creativity by reputation. Dallas said that Koreans are utterly pragmatic (my word actually, not his) - no creativity whatsoever I think his words were. This may be slightly unfair to the people of such a mysterious place such as Seoul- a place of definitive contradiction - but the reputation stands the test of time. There must be some truth behind it. A few months ago I visited an exhibit showcasing Dutch portrait photography and the emergence of a Korean genre [View Full Entry]

Korean Wedding Asia » South Korea » Seoul
Ji-Won at work was getting married and everyone at work was invited! It was a beautiful day and nice cermony in a church and then we had a lovely korean lunch (reception) afterwards. Then the wedding is finished. There is no partying and dancing like our Western style ones! It was fairly short but very nice. The traditional clothing that they changed into was lovely. Everyone places money in envelopes and gives it to the bride and groom when they enter the church. It is uncommon for gifts to be given. HOwever this was not a traditional korean wedding as I [View Full Entry]

Lazy Daisy Days Asia » South Korea » Seoul
The last few days have been quite chill. Besides getting totally mixed up and turned around on the subway there has been little adventure. Wednesday evening’s Jen and Jason usually meet up with some other teachers here and have a late dinner and drinks. So we went to this fancy restaurant with $8 Coronas and $15 Nachos. That's outrageous (makes me miss Central America), so it was draft for me, leaving me with a slight buzz on by the time we left. Good fun. Yesterday, yet another lazy day, I rode the dam subway half way around the city before [View Full Entry]

Seoul Night Out

Seoul Night Out

Friday night. Not too sure what to do with myself. I'm not too worried about it either. It is a nice thing to know you have no obligations. DO whatever you want. Wander around in the dark in Bundang if you please....it's sure as hell safe enough, and the air is beginning to get that welcoming smell of spring. Or burn out on the computer. No, that won't do. That is a waste of a night, isn't it? Oh that's right, I have a cell phone now. If you want to call it a cell phone. More like a piece of [View Full Entry]

I was slightly skeptical about wandering around this city alone today, being completely illiterate, but I found it a lot easier than expected. Jennifer had to work all day so I ventured out on a solo mission to hike the Inwangsan Shamanist Hillside. It is Seoul’s most famous shamanist shrine with Buddhist Temples, interesting rock formations (Zen rocks), natural springs and a fortress wall bordering it. I was very surprised by the amount of garbage left everywhere, I assume by visitors and shamanists themselves. It was everywhere. I was also surprised by these 2 little brat dogs [View Full Entry]

Wow in the 2 days I've been here I've experienced a lot of Culture. Jen's been great filling my days with adventure even though she's has to work from 2pm till 10pm on the weekdays. There is so much to see here in the City and she too has yet to check out so it's great. So today I woke very early, 7:30am, got dressed and headed out to the subway with a piece of paper and written directions on where to go. Jen had a lesson in the morning at 7:00am so we met up in the subway station [View Full Entry]

Im here Asia » South Korea » Seoul
Yesterday the 18th of March I finally landed in the buzzing city of Seoul, South Korea. I was met by a familiar face and a great big hug. And after a quick money exchange we were off. It took about an hour to get into the city and to Jennifer’s apartment by bus and subway. It flew by as Jen and I filled each other in on the events of lives in the past year. When I arrived it was 3am my time and only 6pm here. So to try and make my jet lag minimal I took a shower [View Full Entry]
