Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

This will be a very short entry since I just got home from shopping at 3 in the morning and is in terribly need of some sleep! Yes, the shopping centres here are open till 6am...and just as full as always I guess. Go clubbing and then straight to the shopping lanes...why not?! Anyway, I wanted to inform everyone that I have two more job offers to consider the next couple of days as both Bosch departments in Stuttgart, with which I had interviews last week, apparently want me. I guess I'll have to thank some people for putting in a [View Full Entry]

Lotus Lantern Festival The city of Seoul and the entire country of Korea has been preparing for Buddha’s Birthday for several months. The streets have been lined with neon colored lanterns that are lit at night, and so are the temples. The festivities started off with a Lotus Lantern Festival that took place the Sunday before Buddha's Birthday, in downtown Seoul near Insadong. Earlier in the day, Jogye-sa (one of the temples in the area) hosted a large lantern-making event for foreigners. The places were quickly filled and since it was the day after Meredith [View Full Entry]

The trip to the Bukhansan national park was an adventure in many ways. I made it there by subway and bus and was met by lots of Korean hikers carrying walking sticks and the very latest in hiking fashion. What I had heard about Koreans being into hiking seemed more than true. After walking along the road through one of the still remaining gates of the old fortification wall, build to hold off intruders from the north, I got into the valley. Lots of locals selling lots of food to tourists. I got off the main road and on to the [View Full Entry]

I haven't put up a blog in a while so I wanted to post some pictures of what I've been up to lately. I can't believe it, but I've almost been here for 6 months already. Though the winter really dragged on, time is flying by now. Seoul in Spring is alot more livable than in winter. The mountains around the city are turning green, the sun has come back out and the air is, well still polluted as ever, but just feels fresher. The other day a korean friend helped me order a bike off the internet. I couldn't believe [View Full Entry]

Hi again... Another morning but this time I got up at a better time ---> earlier. Today I'm going to hike in the mountains (Bukhansan national park) north of Seoul. I found this 6 hour trail in my lonely planet guide so maybe it'll be kinda mainstream...well anyway, it's supposed to include parts of the old city wall and some temples so should be good I guess. On the way to camera shopping yesterday I realised I had left my guide book in the coffee place where I had breakfast. I went back several hours later to see if it was [View Full Entry]

It's noon and I just got out of bed... Yes, my first night in Korea I overslept. Well, I'll blame the jetlag and the long day yesterday. The trip went well...I managed to get a couple of hours sleep on the KLM 747...maybe thanks to the nice chilean 50/50% Cabernet-Merlot I had before hitting the sack. Anyway, it took some time to get through customs...three forms to fill out and stamps to collect...very German... So, I was a bit late as I finally made it to the waiting lounge. I recognized Hyojoo right away and we went for a coffee. Was [View Full Entry]

OK, so it wasn't the Red Mile. It was Jogno...right smack dab in the middle of Seoul. OK, so there wasn't 15,000 screaming fans pouring down one strip of Calgary downtown roadway, flashing skin and banners and beer bottles. There was actually about 500,000 people, and they were happy, and they were bathed in the warm glow that only thousands and thousands of lotus lanterns can give. It wasn't Calgary, but it was incredible. Besides, if I was at home, I would have only got the hockey game. Here, I got the hockey game....LIVE (thank you Corey and Tyler, from the [View Full Entry]

Just a little smear of filth to let you all know I'm still alive and reasonably well. Things are going pretty well over here... I've just moved into my new place, which is much better than the old one. We've been and done a few more things, had the kids at school out for an Easter day today, did and egg hunt and all (I've never put together so many kinder surprise toys in my life). Also came 6th out of 193 in a photography contest.... Feel free to browse the "Chrome" competition on www.dpchallenge.com for "Peaty" which is my photo! [View Full Entry]

The first sign of spring in Korea comes with the overwhelming number of blossoms that line pathways, tower over streets, create walls, and brighten the grey streets of Seoul and stone buildings of the Yonsei campus. At this point, the weather is still cold, despite the fact that the lingering feelings of spring allude to warmth and make you wish you could put on a mesh shirt and a flowy skirt. These beautiful blossoms last a total of about 2-3 weeks. This means that at any given place where over 100 buds can be seen, you are likely to see [View Full Entry]

Yes...

Maybe it is a necessary part of travel. Sickness, the kind of sickness that takes over any will to fight, that makes your hair on your head hurt, that makes you feel like you are being twisted inside out, is almost a requirement of long-term travel. It is true that the body is exposed to all kinds of new and exciting diseases, bugs, germs, pollutants, and the like, but what seems more relevant is that the mind and the heart are also exposed to a new kind of outlook. Getting traveling bugs is almost a physical manifestation of “shedding one’s skin”. [View Full Entry]
