Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

My night was a sleepless one with my colon being somewhat trigger happy. I had developed my first ever case of food poisoning and it royally sucked. My stomach bloated and I felt malnutritioned, for the best part of the week that was to follow I would completely lose my appetite. My stomach shunned the thought of food entering its establishment. It thought of it as somewhat of a queer gesture, an insult to its own self righteous dignity. So with all that being said the only cure that Curtis could conjure up was to go to a theme park and [View Full Entry]

Outside the hostel. I'm not sure about the name... but I think I got it right!
I went up to Seoul by plane to attend a two day conference at Ewha University. Beautiful place, well organised, people can speak English (in comparison to Ulsan that is!). I had to fly back on Sunday afternoon... which only left me with a few hours to explore. Stayed in a hostel called "holiday in Korea". I can truly recommend it to other travelers. And it is ideally located if you want to see the old palaces. The closest one being less than 50m from the hostel! Though the map provided by the hostel isn't very helpful! Here are a few [View Full Entry]

Two things happened today that really stand out in my somewhat boring scheduled routine day. I'll start with the bad one since I've always been the type that prefers the good news last. 1. I bit into a plum that had a WORM in it. this may not seem like a big deal to most people but I almost fainted. I don't really care for worms or creepy crawlers but to have one in my mouth was just.. so.. gross. 2. It rained. I mean it raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneddddddddddd! and I love this. This is actually one of the things I love most [View Full Entry]

Well, the first rule of studying abroad is: make sure your passport hasn't expired. The second rule of studying abroad is: make sure your passport hasn't expired. Why they expire I don't know, mine smelled just fine, but they do have expiration dates. Of course I know that passports must be renewed, but in all these past few months of planning my summer study abroad in Korea, I never even once noticed that my passport expired April 27th, 2009. I copied my passport to mail a copy to the university in Korea, and didn't notice. I used my passport to [View Full Entry]

After 3 months of faaaaarming my arse off in Japan my visa was set to expire so I opted for a welcome 2 week break to South Korea. The flight over was the worst flying experience I have ever had. En route to Seoul from Tokyo we was awarded some major turbulence, at one point the plane just dropped like a deadweight out of the sky for a strong yet solidly firm 2 seconds, in that instant a chorus of manic screams bellowed out throughout the plane and it wouldn't have surprised me if the biggest came from the cockpit. An [View Full Entry]

I really have no idea whether I'm supposed to be sleeping or awake, but I'm in a transit lounge in Seoul, South Korea at 3:00 am. Woohoo! We have a 5 hour layover (!) and then a 2 hour flight to Beijing. I think that makes 30 hours of travel. Let's hope it's worth it. We have met a bunch of other people from our group and they are a nice range of ages. There is even a girl Rob's age named Hannah who is traveling with her grandmother. The 14 hour flight was what you might expect, I slept a [View Full Entry]
