Background: Korea was an independent kingdom under Chinese suzerainty for most of the past millennium. Following its victory in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan occupied Korea; five years later it formally annexed the entire peninsula. After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula while a Communist-style government was installed in the north. During the Korean War (1950-53), US and other UN forces intervened to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. An armistice was signed in 1953, splitting the peninsula along a demilitarized zone at about the 38th parallel. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth with per capita income rising to roughly 14 times the level of North Korea. In 1987, South Korean voters elected ROH Tae-woo to the presidency, ending 26 years of military dictatorships. South Korea today is a fully functioning modern democracy. In June 2000, a historic first North-South summit took place between the South's President KIM Tae-chung and the North's leader KIM Jong Il.

I saw this ring and it was engraved with the word “rebel”. I wear it and look at it often wondering what it means. Go against the grain. Do something different. Make a change. Lauryn Hill has a song about rebel... Rebel, rebel, rebel, rebel, rebel Repent, the day is far too spent, rebel... rebel! Wake up and rebel We must destroy in order to rebuild Wake up, you might as well Oh are you satisfied Rebel... ohhh rebel Why don't you rebel? I agree…We must destroy in order to rebuild. Even ourselves. Sometimes when we reach the bottom that’s when [View Full Entry]

No, this isn't an attempt at an April Fool's joke. Last night, I attended the DPR vs Korea soccer match. Getting there was the craziest part of the whole night in my opinion. EVERYONE was heading to the stadium so the subway was PACKED. I was squished, herded, pushed, shoved, and squished again just to get onto the train. haha It was so crazy! People had their faces painting, singing loudly cause they had already started drinking. It was crazy. I wasn't really sure what to expect. I never would have thought that North would play south, let alone that NK [View Full Entry]

These past couple months have been fairly uneventful. It is now starting to warm up we are becoming more active. Two weekends ago we went on a caving and ferry trip that was pretty cool. We went on a "pharry" ride or so our tour guide called it! Everything was mostly dead, so the view was gorgeous just all brown. After the ferry ride we went to a cave. We were just expecting a hole in the wall, but it was massive. The cave appeared to go on forever and we didn't even have the chance to follow all the caverns. [View Full Entry]

Hwaseong Fortress consists of restored buildings and walls, which run through modern-day Suwon. The fortress was constructed in the late 1700's and is still looking good today. Another teacher and I visited the fortress in February. We walked most of its perimeter, which, I have been told, is about 6 kilometres in length. We started at the bell of "filial piety". However, not knowing the significance of this boulder-sized PA system, I missed the chance to pay a nominal fee and gain familial brownie points. Our walk lasted several hours, during which time we travelled alongside, or on top of [View Full Entry]

Wow, look at me...I might actually get a blog out on time this week...amazing! Honestly, I really try my hardest, but sometimes I get sidetracked, and this whole 'find a job' thing is also a little taxing on my time. Of course, all of you loyal readers are never far from the front of my mind :) This weekend didn't morph into the disaster that I had imagined was possible, but I had a lot of fun and as always really enjoyed just hanging out. There are a few tense thoughts floating around Korea right now, and it's maybe not pleasurable, [View Full Entry]

It is almost 2:30 am on Sunday night (morning) and I can NOT sleep. I'm not tired at all, in fact I'm wide awake and I can't relax. I'm just.. AWAKE! I had a decent day, alright conversation, a good walk, a few laughs, some bad coffee. I started to get ready for bed to try and trick myself into thinking I was tired. My logic: maybe if I just do the things I do before I go to sleep that would help. I washed my face and brushed my teeth for the 3rd time, I tidied up my kitchen and [View Full Entry]

*Deep Breath* AAAAHHHHHH....I love the smell of fresh mountain air! It was a crisp day as we headed out to go hiking. The sun was warm and the air was cold. I wasn't sure where we were going but lea assured me her friends had everything under control. We went to Bukhansan National Park. I was a bit skeptical. After packing my bag the night before (pocket knife, granola bar, first aid kid, water, cameras(fully charged), sunglasses...) I half wondered if this was going to be a hike or a nice path up a big hill, where men in business suits [View Full Entry]

Today, Nobel Peace Prize winner George F. Smoot gave a talk at EWHA. He received his title for Physics in 2006. I can't really write too much about the lecture, because to be honest, I didn't understand a lot of it. My knowledge in physics is minimal at BEST! haha But basically his findings proved the Big Bang theory correct. Also Einsteins theory that the Universe isn't expanding to be wrong, that the universe is expanding. It was pretty cool though to hear a Nobel Peace Prize winner speak so it deserved an entry. I only wish I had something more [View Full Entry]

Got cheek? Asia » South Korea » Seoul
I went out to eat with another teacher tonight and we ate cheek. Pig cheek, I think. It's only gross if you sit and think about it, really, it was delicious. Galbi is the Korean bbq with the grill on the table. It comes with various sauces to dip the grilled meat in and cloves of garlic that roast on the table also big lettucy leaves to wrap it up and eat it with. Very yummy and very filling which is good since I am running low on won these days. I came at the end of February which means I [View Full Entry]
