So on the 14th, my sister forwarded me a travel agency newsletter with a cheap flight to Seoul. I looked at it and then emailed the agent about the upcoming weekend. The next day, I scootered my way to his office and bought a ticket for Seoul departing the 16th. I contacted my old lab partner, Aidan, who's teaching English there and asked if his offer for me to crash was still good--it was. I was set for Seoul!
Upon arrival, I took the bus as instructed and got off at approximately the right area. I found a payphone and proceeded to give Aidan's cell a call. Unfortunately, I had the wrong number! Here I was, at 11:15pm in Seoul without a map or guidebook and anyone's contact information. My Canadian cellphone and sister's Taiwanese cellphone would not work on S. Korea's network (they horde their network apparently) so I couldn't even wait for Aidan to call me.
Y'know, if this was early in my trip, I'd probably freak out but worse things have happened so I was pretty cool about it. I knew at some point, I'd get to his place. Seoul didn't seem like a scary place either and there were still lots of people out. It was a Saturday night after all. Lots of drunk people passed out on the side alleys. Even a crazy one shouting at nothing. Ah...drunks are the same anywhere in the world.
I asked some Korean guy where the nearest internet cafe was and he was nice enough to walk me to one and get me settled in a booth before heading off to wherever he was going. Thanks to that guy!! There, I signed into MSN and began the waiting game for Aidan to pop back online. He did, eventually, around 12:15am. We chatted, he figured out where I was and said he was on his way. All was good.
His apartment is a pretty sweet pad. I hope whatever apartment I find in Toronto is this sweet.
