My apologies for the lack of updates lately. I need to do some legit catch up on here, but I'll at least start with some point form of what I've been up to. had a wonderful birthday. My students brought me gifts, and I had a really fun night out with some of my teacher friends. We went to the local pub, and then went to the basement of that building for some noraebang (karaoke). It was a late night, but it was a blast! The next morning came really early when it came to teaching. I was grateful that it was a lighter teaching day for me. went into Bundang last Saturday with Griff for date night. We went to an American place called Suji's, so I could enjoy a western-style brunch. I'd been craving ... read more
My last blog promised information on soju, possibly the most dangerous drink known to man kind. Well lets be honets it comes a close second to pear Black Rat Cider. So this blog is all about food food food!! I should state at this point that I am in no way a 'foodie'. In fact I'm the complete opposite, most likely due to the fact that I'm still a recovering vegetarian (a terrible, terrible disease I battled for twenty-one years!!). But in Korea life is all about in what amazing form the next meal appear! Its not just me Ed and Goeun are the same. One of the main reasons for this may be the cold. Finding a resturant (espically one with a BBQ in the middle of the table) offers a chance to feel ones ... read more
Here gos my first blog. I am sat in a cafe very near to where I am staying. The cafe is in no way 'Korean' but its the third time I've been here so I have got quite a repore with one of the waitdresses. Plus the coffee is great! What to tell you about Seoul?Well, its bloody freezing! For the next five and a half months I suspect I will be complaining about th heat but right now I am constantly cold! Why then is this blog intitled 'the city of warmth'? The people. Koreans are the warmest, kindest people I have ever met. I first expirenced this while attempting to get from the airport to Hwajeong (where my friend Ed lives and my Korean home!). By this point I had not slept for over 24 ... read more
Living in the countryside of South Korea could leave a person stranded if they didn’t own a car except Koreans have come up with a three-tiered bus system working eighteen hours per day. This three-tiered system uses express buses driving directly to and from major city cores to the countryside, standard buses picking up a few extra stops and not going large distances and local buses running haplessly through the entire countryside but never into the major city centers. Plus as long as you own a T-money card, your life using public transportation will be as simple as getting on, scanning your card, sitting down, enjoying the ride and scanning your card as you depart at your destination. One of the biggest advantages of this system is every bus route is color coded for even the ... read more
Seoul By Mouth And By Foot (Not To Be Confused With Foot In Mouth)
Published: November 15th 2010Asia » South Korea » Seoul » HongikSeoul By Mouth And By Foot (Not To Be Confused With Foot In Mouth) Korea is awesome! I don’t know if it’s the unfamiliar culture, the cleanliness of the city, the warmth of the people, or the weather. Never have we felt so welcomed in our lives. We feel like celebrities sometimes when people come up and want a picture with us or when someone buys us something at a restaurant just to say ”welcome to Korea”. The plane ride over was easy and enjoyable. We sat next to a nice guy from South Seattle who works for Amtrak. It was his billionth time traveling east over the Pacific and had some good insight into where to go and what to do in both Korea and Thailand. Our time on the plane was mainly spent watching ... read more
After I left Inje I went back to Seoul for a few days. I stayed in a different area is Seoul this time. The Haeungdea section that is suppose to be full of college students. The area was ok, not really what I was expecting. Most of our night time activities involved late night outings at the park. Seoul the second time around was going to be my last stop in South Korea until I went back to China. This time I saw the Blue House, where the president lives. I was asked multiple times where I was going when I was walking on the road to the house. I guess after the assassination attempt awhile back by North Korean soldiers they decided to beef up security. I also saw a couple war museums this time. ... read more
Well the past few weeks in Korea have gone as most expect by now: working by day, partying by night, and fighting off the pains of liver cerosis Friday through Sunday. All in all, I must say life is good. I have found yet another country that suits my style in this world and, the more I travel the more I begin to realize… I am easy. It doesn’t take much to grab my attention, suck me into the local culture, and fall in love with everything around me. From the people, to the scenery, to the food; I love it here in South Korea. For Purple Mountains Majesty I can’t lie though; I haven’t spent all my time within the confines of this marvelous nation. Last weekend I strayed from the border and crossed into ... read more
Saturday, 24th April 2010 Touching down at the modern Incheon International Airport at 6.30pm this evening, I had spent my last 10 hours journeying from home to Seoul. To save on my airfare, I had opted for a change of plane at the Hong Kong International Airport rather than a direct option. It was closed to 7pm after clearing the customs and collecting my baggage. Finding the correct bus to my destination wasn't difficult. I stopped by at the airport limousine bus counter manned by a middle aged woman. "A bus ticket to Hongdae please!" I showed her the Korean address of my guesthouse just to make sure that we were on the same frequency. "9,000 won please," said the lady. I parted my money in exchange for a bus ticket ticket for service # 6002. ... read more
Bees Knees. It's a drink and it's a little delicious. gin. lemon juice, honey syrup and a twist of lemon peel. I like the name and I really like gin and well, anyone who knows me at all will know I have a thing for bee's. Oh, and I was a bee for Halloween but it was hastily thrown together. No mini skirts or fishnets for this bee, no, no.. it was all very pg and appropriate since it was for the kiddies. I forgot my wings at home which was I think, the best part of the outfit. I can't seem to pull off wings unless it's for Halloween. We have a new director now, I may have mentioned this previously but this is the 3rd in 8 months for our school. It's alright though, ... read more
