I’m back… I wanted to post yesterday (my short day), but it is no longer my short day. Ugh… It was the start of a new quarter on Monday and class schedules have been switched up. I lost a few classes and then gained a few, which altered my schedule to the point where I no longer have a short day. But I was told it would be considered when next quarter starts, so I am hoping to have a few short days come February. So we shall see... In any event, my new schedule was out of my control so I’m looking on the bright side. I have three 2 hour breaks, one on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. So technically I’m not teaching more, I just don’t get out early on Monday. So it’s not that awful. I’ll make the best of it. On a bright note, my one class that I ABSOLUTLY hated because of three shit head little boys is now better. The trio has been broken up so now I only have two of them. The two are much more manageable than three. I wish I had a recording of one of these classes and you could
get an idea of how insane these kids are. And since kicking a kid out of class doesn’t have any real consequences, they are returned to class within a few minutes. See, you have to understand… A private school‘s main goal is to make a profit. In order to make a profit kids need to be enrolled and happy. If a student goes home saying that they were punished and school wasn’t fun, mom might pull the kid out. Hence money is potentially being lost. SO if the child is a brat and knows nothing will really happen them they can be little pains in the asses. Haha… So, this particular class is better for me.
This past weekend was a good weekend. Nothing too exciting, but I did manage to get to Seoul a few times. On Friday I stayed in and did some needed cleaning and laundry. On Saturday, my lady friend had one of her friends from Japan come to visit. Seeing that my girlfriend isn’t a tourist she really didn’t have many ideas for where to take her friend, so I offered to be the guide. I was happy to do this because it gave
me a chance to really test my knowledge of the subway system and my memory of places I have already visited. This way if/when someone comes to visit me here I should be able to plan a jam packed experience. So who’s going to be first!? 😊
Anyways, I took them to a few places, mainly shopping places. Girls will be girls. Haha… It was a pretty fun time. We first headed to
Dongdeamun (동대문). The Korean name "Dongdaemun" means "Great East Gate," and it was so named because it was the major eastern gate in the wall that surrounded Seoul during the
Joseon Dynasty . Near Dongdeamun there are a lot of street shopping and a pretty huge underground shopping area which is connected to a big mall. We ate a pretty good lunch here as well.
After Dongdeamun we headed to
Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을). Bukchon Hanok Village is the traditional village is composed of lots of alleys and is preserved to show a 600-year-old urban environment. It’s located right in Seoul. It’s an amazing area that is on the side of a hill and when you get to the top
you can see a large section of Seoul. Many of these traditional houses still are being lived in, and some are being used as stores, restaurants or cafes. We ended up finding a tea place that had a bunch of different kinds of teas. It was pretty fancy.
After the Bukchon Hanok Village we then headed to
Myeongdong (명동) for some more shopping and dinner. At this point it had been a pretty long day so when we decided to eat we all agreed chicken and beer. We ate, drank and talked for a few hours. It was a good time. Then it was time to head back to my neck of the woods.
On Sunday I wanted to take it easy, but I did the opposite. Haha. I bummed around Seoul with my lady friend. For lunch we went in to Gangnam for some Japanese curry at
CoCo Curry . This restaurant is by far the best curry place, in my opinion, to get some curry. This was the first time I’ve eaten at this place since April of 2011. After lunch we went to
“Time Square” , located in western Seoul. This place was
CoCo Curry
Chicken Cutlet with rice and cheese.
Delicious! huge! It’s basically a gigantic shopping mall and houses the world's largest cinema screen. It’s a pretty fascinating building and complex. In the front courtyard area they had Christmas decorations set up, including a huge Christmas tree. The tree reminded me of the one that is put up every year at Rockefeller Center in NYC. It was pretty cool.
Anyways, thats about it. I hope December is treating you all well. Only a few more weeks until Christmas! 😊
Until next time...
