I live in a country where...
- You must be bilingual to work at most places....including Subway
- If it is raining and you are umbrella-less, no less than 5 people will offer to walk with you to your destination so that you may share their umbrella. (this also includes the convenience store owner who will gladly walk you all the way to your apartment)
- People have their phone numbers attached to the back of their cars. In case they are parked in your spot, just call and they will gladly come and move.
- You use two hands when giving (or receiving) anything; from credit cards to cashiers to a paper from a student. It's considered a sign of respect, which also means you are giving your full attention to whomever you are dealing with at that time
- Teachers are respected
- Anyone is willing to help you, whenever you are in need
- People are genuinely interested in the stories you have to tell
- The service industry respects it's clients and hasn't forgotten about customer service, and this extends into the realm of retail as well. (this is usually manifested in the form of 'service' )
- Your neighbors know you, and smile at you every morning as you leave for work, and often greet you with a smile when they see you on the street
- Students as well as business men wear slippers at work/school as it is considered rude to wear shoes inside.
- People actually apologize for not knowing your language...in their own country! (I should be the one apologizing for not learning their language)
- Patriotism is thicker and runs deeper than anyone could possible realize
- Students study no less than 3 languages, are fluent in at least 2 and 5th graders study calculus
- Mountains, rivers, parks, the ocean and the beach are all less than 3 hours away...in any direction
- Walking down the street in the middle of the night is not dangerous
- You can leave your purse on a table unattended for the better part of an evening and when you return no one will have tried to steal from it
- The overstock of a store is kept outside (in the open) on the sidewalk for storage, and no one tries to walk away with merchandise they didn't pay for
- Lunch can be delivered to your office (for 1 person) with no extra charge, and quickly!
- Where you adapt to not having a microwave and oven or a dryer...and are fine with it
- I live in a country called South Korea, and all I speak is true :)
