So let's see if I can keep it updated this time around. I guess I better get up to speed. I left Denver on Sunday (March 9) in the AM. I made the big mistake of going out to the Ogden with my dad for my last night. Our intentions were good, just grab some food and I'd pick up my last paycheck. Ended up pretty much closing the bar down and getting a bit too hammered. Instead of going back to my folks' house and finish packing, I passed out on their sofa only to be awakened by my mother about one hour before we had to leave for the airport. I frantically packed my shit, almost forgot my passport, and headed off to the airport. After dragging ass through DIA I was finally Korea ... read more

Well just as my entry title says, I hopped on a bus today and went to Gwangju. That's a large city kind of north-east of where I'm at. It definitely seems like a bigger town than Mokpo and it should because it is. There's the 7 story electronics mall which was fairly awesome. I'll have to go back when I have more money haha. Gwangju has a much larger downtown area than Mokpo for sure. I went with my new friend Bob and we explored a bunch of Gwangju, looking but not finding the underground western stores. They're literally underneath the ground near a subway entrance I'm led to believe. I guess if I find them I could get deli meat like turkey and other western delights that Mokpo is missing. It's roughly an hour bus ... read more

This is the biannual World Ceramic Festival which is held in three towns, Gwangju, Ichon, and Yeoju all south of Seoul, and depending on traffic a 1 - 3 hour drive, but as we found out the second day that we were there, the best way to get to the festival from Seoul is by the free shuttle buses which leave from the COAX mall and Insadong. The first day we went to the Ichon site which has the main exhibit hall and shows all the competition pieces from all the competing countries. Most of them were very good, but......allot of them were the deep abstract form of work, and that was the type of design that won the "Grand Prize" a bunch of little cylinder's in a V pattern? After walking around the exhibit, the ... read more

Hi Everyone! Thanks for checking out my blog! I finally arrived in Korea today!! It was a long flight, but it didn't seem so bad since it was mostly overnight and I slept most of the way. I'm living in a two bedroom appartment with another teacher at my school, so she was there to meet when I got here. She is AMAZING!!! She's already been helping me out a lot and showing me around our area which is really cute! I won't have internet for awhile but as soon as I do I will upload some pics. I hope you're all doing well and please keep the e-mails coming, I love hearing from you all!! Miss you guys! Priya... read more

Ill have to admit, the powers of Karaoke rested latent inside me until somewhat recently. Not unlike a young Clark Kent who discovered his talents set him apart from other mild-mannered journalists, yours truly has leaped his own tall building of sorts and came down nothing short of super. The Korean people take their Karaoke frightfully serious and any type of foreign invasion could tip the balance of an already slippery sino-american state of relations. I, of course, took this great responsibility into consideration before I stormed the stage last Saturday. A brief note on the history of Karaoke: The year was 1895, a young Korean man named Sang Kim-Long was working in a small, out of the way, soju joint in the area now known as Busan. The nation was still reeling and rife ... read more

My blogs are too infrequent to have a central theme, so here's a plethora of pictures of the past month or so. I know some of you back home wanted to see more pictures of exactly where I live, so I sort of cleaned the place up and shot a few. The rest just show the riot of buildings that touch the skies all around my apartment, which is only four floors high. Most of the apartments (there are no houses) are ten times taller than my place. I went upstairs to check if there was access to the roof, and I was in luck. Usually it's locked, but not today. The luscious green tree in one of the pics is my "backyard." Sadly, this is the first time I've ever seen it! As I strolled ... read more

Hello, goodbye, thank you and stop here! are the only Korean words I have learned in two months. I came here in June ready to master the alphabet in a week and move on to full sentences. Of course my arrogance bit me in the ass as I still only know four words/phrases. In fact, the lady at Paris Baugette, the best bread place I've found, enjoys laughing at me everytime I try new words. We have a love/hate relationship. So this blog is an array of topics and pictures, none of which relate, except that they are about South Korea. It's been a little over two months since I've been here. I remember arriving at the airport and feeling like my heart was going to explode because I finally followed through with traveling abroad. Immediatley ... read more

So last Wednesday was our going away party at Westfair (a local dive that is never busy, but has great drinks). The last four years in Bakersfield have been suprisingly interesting, and I have met some incredible people; however, everybody is now venturing in new directions, and it's about damn time. Recently Bakersfield was acknowledged in the newspaper for being "# 1 in Smog!" in the whole U.S....fabulous. I've read that the cities in S. Korea have horrible air, but I guess it will be just like home :) Stephanie and Staci, my burnette devil-angels (more devil than angel) are moving to the beautiful serenity of California's National Park. In the fall, they will be laying in sun filled, sandy beaches of Cali. Good luck ladies!! Even though my brother, Kevin, and I didn't get along ... read more

I will be leaving to Gwangju, S. Korea around June 12th, and I need advice on what essentials to bring and what I should leave behind. So far, I have gathered that deodorant, toothpaste, and other toiletries are very expensive there, and I should pack a year's supply...true? I've also been reading a lot of blogs that say the weather is very unstable...one day it's hot, the next day freezing. If I don't pack a lot of clothes, are there places that sell clothes at a decent price, or should I pack as much as possible? I don't have a lot of family here, so I am pretty much selling most of my things. I can get by with pretty little, but I also don't want to end up paying $20 for a simple product I ... read more
