Hello Hello. Well it looks like I better get cracking! It’s been a while since I last wrote and I seem to have accumulated so many photos over the past two months that I’m trying to establish the chronology of events….Ah yeh Nonsan Dalgi Chuktche. Easter weekend, it’s so weird being in a country that has absolutely no Easter. I mean how on earth can you celebrate Christmas and no Easter that’s just totally not right, anyhow that was the case here in the Republic, not a single acknowledgment of the event, in fact not even a retailers acknowledgment so not a single Easter egg was to be found and definitely no Good Friday or Easter Monday and no family time! Kinda weird to look back and think that a year ago I was lapping up ... read more

Over the long weekend in early May we decided to spend our time island hopping in Chungcheongnam-do province. We started our trek on Anmyeondo, the largest of the islands. One of my students had written a journal about a beautiful flower festival that was happening on the island so we decided to check it out. "Floritopia 2009" turned out to be a collection of different flower displays and a few showcases of flowers from around the world. All in all, Flowertopia was just like strolling through a public park back in Canada. Only with a few thousand of our closest friends. As evening approached we decided to head down onto the beach to scope out a potential camping site. I like to think I was a great sport about camping, but Jeff might tell a different ... read more

Shanny Surprise! So last week Jonathan and I headed to the airport to pick up Mommy Peters. We were waiting off to the side by the doors, and forgetting that she had to go through customs, we ended up waiting a fairly long time. I looked away for a second and turned back thinking that I was seeing things, delusional maybe from starring at the gates for so long. When it finally hit, that I was looking at my sister, I screamed and then I believe I yelled “what the F***!” as everyone in the airport looked at me. What a surprise! I cannot believe everyone was able to keep this a secret from me for so long. Best B-day present ever!! The Peters women were together again! We took the long bus back to Buyeo, ... read more

The weekend before mom and Shan came to Korea, Jonathan and I went to Songnisan National Park with his two co-teachers. We partook in a 6 hour hike. It was pretty serious. After 3 hours we finally managed to reach the top. There was an extra 200 meter hike to a higher outlook. I thought, hey, I made it this far and now we only have to go down, of course I should run up there. Glad I did; it was a lovely view. Although it was a perfectly clear day the visibility was a little poor. We were told that it was yellow dust. Sand blows off the Gobi desert and ends up in Korea. It's called yellow dust season here. We were for warned of the horror stories of yellow dust season. Other English ... read more

I met up with Jamie on Sunday afternoon to go to the hot springs. We met on the plane ride over to Korea. I had to take the metro to the train station, which of course I went to the wrong train station the first time around. I got a train to Onyangoncheon. It takes an hour and a half to get there from the station. Round trip the tickets cost me 12,600KW which is a little over 8 dollars. Woo hoo! I kept asking people which train takes me to *points to ticket* "here" The only guy who helped me was the guy who I'm assuming was the janitor because he was putting toilet paper on the trains. He goes "ooh yes..here.." so i get on the train. He sees me agian and goes "no..no ... read more

Unless the pictures say otherwise, they are from the Korean Folk Village (ie. Korean colonial Williamsburg) If you happened to notice that the location has changed under the title of the blog, it's not because we've gone anywhere, it's because I've finally figure out exactly where we are. :P The campus that we are staying at is right outside of the city of Cheonan. There are 543,309 people in the city so it is very small compared to the 2.8 million person city of Daegu that we will be going to live in next week. We have not gotten our school placements yet, the person from our metropolitan office of education (MOE) is coming Thursday afternoon to talk to us and give us our placements. I'm excited to find out what age of students I will ... read more

Hi mum, you're the only one who'll be reading this so i'll just make it out to you. I've been in South Korea for three weeks now and i've spent every cent (actually every won) that i brought over with me. Luckily, i have begun camp and my finacial worries are temporarily over, as they'll take care of me while i'm here and i'll leave with a big fat paycheck at the end. I had an awesome time bumming around seoul over the last month. First i stayed in hyehwa with my new yorker friend ben for about a week, i met his swedish housemate tola and i'll move in with tola to replace ben (he went back to new york - state, not the city) when i finish camp. Tola's place is in the northern ... read more

I am very sorry it took me so long to write this entry. The explanation is at the bottom. Please forgive me. Anyway, I went with a group called Adventure Korea - which arranges English speaking tours around the country - on a day trip in Chungcheongbuk-do, the only landlocked province. We started with a ferry ride down a river. You can see some of the foliage starting to go. For a country that (supposedly) has the same winters we do, they're a little late getting to the actual cold part. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous. I may have mentioned this before, but Koreans have a tendency to ... read more

Do you know who you are? Don’t know? It doesn’t matter. Just read on. Choseok is a major 3 day holiday and one of the busiest times of year for travel in Korea, making it nearly impossible to get a train or bus ticket to any destination in the country. Luckily, after some grueling efforts and cut-throat demands from a Korean train station volunteer, I was able to score the last and only one way standing ticket to Gyeryong, where I would meet up with my sultry Scottish lassie, Laura, in our love motel where we could relish in a room of what would be our last taste of comfort and conversation for the entire weekend. In Korea, for $35 a night, you can stay in a tasteful hotel with furnished rooms equipped with a big ... read more

A travel book I read on the plane told about a Canadian soldier who had experienced Korea during the Korean War as nothing but lots of mud. What he did not have in mind, of course, is the Boryeong Mud Festival. The Boryeong Mud Festival has become justly famous for its somewhat wilder side, especially with the American GI's there on the last weekend. This year there is also an all night RAVE. There are lots of good pictures on the web of Americans looking silly, but they mostly seem to be having lots of fun haming it up for the Korea photographers. They are great pictures. But I feel that the pictures which are shown on the web are somewhat unrepresentative. For example, there are a lot of Koreans doing the mud thing during the ... read more
