Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. November 4-7: Singapore This day we took a morning flight out to Singapore. It was quite a pleasant flight and I managed to watch three (awful) movies. We took the super clean and efficient (and air-conditioned) MRT subway from the airport to Chinatown and walked to our little budget hotel from there. Emboldened by several colleagues and friends who told us that it's safe to eat food from ANYWHERE in Singapore, we walked around Chinatown and had some dinner from food hawker stalls, consisting of friend and steamed wontons in soup or with noodles. Our first day there we went downtown [View Full Entry]

SINGAPORE This is the final leg of our Singapore-Malacca-Singapore trip from October 30, 2005 to November 4, 2005. For the first 2 portions, please check my Singapore (part2) blog and Malacca blog. Friday 1. Having nowhere to go to except Orchard, we had a late breakfast, checked-out early and deposited our luggages again. 2. We went around Orchard from 11AM to past 2PM. Had lunch at the new food court at the 4th floor of Wisma Atria (unfortunately for me, it still wasn’t open the time I was there last June. We were staying at nearby Hilton and had l [View Full Entry]

Saw a free internet sign and couldnt resist! Just having my stop over here in Singapore before the final and significant (scariest) flight out to Hanoi! I havent slept in how many hours and feeling the sleep deprivation kick in! I must say it was hard saying good bye at the airport but nevertheless I probably sat half the flight shell shocked, thinking heck... this is it! hahaha It isnt so bad just hope everything goes smoothly to Hanoi! Just excited about being out of England! Ahh!! Although -whispers- it is raining in Singapore! I hear the laughter all the way [View Full Entry]

Hello all, Well Singapore has been quite the time, very busy in fact, Lindz and I are both fairly worn out. What inbettween putting crappy sheets that don't fit on our beds on our beds, being chatty cathys with whoever will listen and well Lindsay has fallen down twice now. Yesterday we walked for 9 hours and saw all the sights of Singapore. Went to the raffles and Arab street and little india and chinatown and saw all the colonial oppression and oh I met a girl from Bosnia, that was neat. We also got some seriously good stuff at a [View Full Entry]

Alrighty, well we're here!!!!! in Southeast Asia and ready to go, well now we are, there have been a few major events that have transpired since we left Van. the first and most exciting being that we were bumped up from our cheapest of the cheap economy class tix to BUSINESS CLASS!!!! and let me tell you, I'm this close to selling out to the man so that I can make a ton of money and be able to fly in "Dynasty" all the time. Huge seats that reclined all the way back, indie tv screens with movies and super nintendo, [View Full Entry]

Ok, so today is a little rainy (I swear it's a monsoon!!!) so I thought it was a perfect day to update our journal. After arriving on Saturday morning, Leslie and I slept for a bit and then headed off to Bedok Reservoir for the World Cup wakeboarding competition. It was pretty cool and they had male/female competitors from 16 different countries, including Canada. They were amazing and make it look soooo easy. They even had one girl from Singapore who was 12.....yep, 12! crazy! So, we basked in the sun and watched that and had some delicious wonton soup before [View Full Entry]

I know I have a few entries that start with an excuse for the delay in 'publishing' it, and this time it's really down to my technophobe ways. Then dreading the catch up! Finally I've learned a few tricks so you'll have my last 5 weeks all at once- SORRY! I must have hardened from numerous travelling situations over the last few months, as I feel as though I've floated into this interesting city with such ease. I suppose being able to read a map, and ask just about anyone a question and get a smile and an english response helps [View Full Entry]

Well, now that we have been living in Bangkok for almost 3 months, we decided to do our first weekend trip out of town. Saturday afternoon we boarded Turkish Airlines, which has a stopover in BKK on its route from Istanbul to Singapore. Suffice it to say that the flight crew must have attended the Aeroflot School of Inflight Charm as we didn’t spot a single smile from the flight crew on the entire flight. We also discovered that there were a couple of pretty stinky people in our vicinity on the aircraft. Overall, we were pretty unimpressed with Turkish and [View Full Entry]
