Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. I have decided to join Laura on her travels around the world. Our first stop is Singapore. It is hot and steamy here which makes a pleasent change from cold and wet England. We only have a few days here before heading to Thailand. [View Full Entry]

Contrasting cities Asia » Singapore
Hi folks, I left Bangkok on Wednesday morning (early!) and got a 2.5 hour flight to Singapore. As soon as I stepped out of the airport I could see the difference in the cities. Whilst Bangkok is bustling and noisy and quite dusty/dirty, Singapore feels the complete opposite; Calm, quiet and very very clean. I know a lot of people have said to me that Singapore is a little too clean, and it's laws on chewing gum, for example, are extreme in the least. (For those not in the know, you cannot chew gum in Singapore, and you can apparently be [View Full Entry]

Russell - Well we have arrived safely at Singapore airport to wait for our connecting flight to Ho Chi Minh. It is 9:30am our time but as I am still on GMT it is actually 1:30am and I'm starting to feel it. We have a 5 hour wait here then a 2 hour flight to HCMC so I should be well and truely tired by the time I get there. The flight was pretty cool though what the security guard at Manchester airport was looking for between Lindsays breasts is still a mystery. Judging by her short hair cut it may [View Full Entry]

Arrived at singapore Asia » Singapore
Woo-Hoo. Finally arrived in singapore after an eight hr flight. Arrived at 5 in the morning with severe thunderstorms and lightning on touch down. Didnt get stopped at all at customs, so Bin got through with all the banned stuff. After having no sleep at all through the flight we mastered the MRT, the singapore rail system. Took three interchanges to get to our hotel in the middle of the city. After lugging the backpacks around in the pouring rain we made it to the hotel only to find we were too early to check in. Killed time for a while [View Full Entry]

November 4-7: Singapore This day we took a morning flight out to Singapore. It was quite a pleasant flight and I managed to watch three (awful) movies. We took the super clean and efficient (and air-conditioned) MRT subway from the airport to Chinatown and walked to our little budget hotel from there. Emboldened by several colleagues and friends who told us that it's safe to eat food from ANYWHERE in Singapore, we walked around Chinatown and had some dinner from food hawker stalls, consisting of friend and steamed wontons in soup or with noodles. Our first day there we went downtown [View Full Entry]

SINGAPORE This is the final leg of our Singapore-Malacca-Singapore trip from October 30, 2005 to November 4, 2005. For the first 2 portions, please check my Singapore (part2) blog and Malacca blog. Friday 1. Having nowhere to go to except Orchard, we had a late breakfast, checked-out early and deposited our luggages again. 2. We went around Orchard from 11AM to past 2PM. Had lunch at the new food court at the 4th floor of Wisma Atria (unfortunately for me, it still wasn’t open the time I was there last June. We were staying at nearby Hilton and had l [View Full Entry]

Saw a free internet sign and couldnt resist! Just having my stop over here in Singapore before the final and significant (scariest) flight out to Hanoi! I havent slept in how many hours and feeling the sleep deprivation kick in! I must say it was hard saying good bye at the airport but nevertheless I probably sat half the flight shell shocked, thinking heck... this is it! hahaha It isnt so bad just hope everything goes smoothly to Hanoi! Just excited about being out of England! Ahh!! Although -whispers- it is raining in Singapore! I hear the laughter all the way [View Full Entry]

Hello all, Well Singapore has been quite the time, very busy in fact, Lindz and I are both fairly worn out. What inbettween putting crappy sheets that don't fit on our beds on our beds, being chatty cathys with whoever will listen and well Lindsay has fallen down twice now. Yesterday we walked for 9 hours and saw all the sights of Singapore. Went to the raffles and Arab street and little india and chinatown and saw all the colonial oppression and oh I met a girl from Bosnia, that was neat. We also got some seriously good stuff at a [View Full Entry]
