Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. Russell - Well here we are back in Singapore, though we are arriving by train this time not plane. The train ride down was uneventful and even a bit of sleep was achieved. First stop as you arrive is the Woodlands train stop in the north of the island. Here you have to get off the train to have your luggage searched and passports stamped before getting back on the train for the ride to the southern tip of the island in the centre of Singapore city itself. I have to say my mental image of Singapore was of one big [View Full Entry]

Not much to report on today. Late breakfast, cocktails at Raffles. The usual Friday hardships. Tomorrow we fly to Perth where, amongst other things, we’re looking forward to sampling some of the local culture - Fosters, Barbies, drunken youths rioting in the streets, that sort of thing. It occurs to me that gone half past midnight and still polishing off the last of our supplies of the locally brewed Tiger beer, no doubt before we fall upon the mini bar like raptors, is not the best way to prepare for an overnight flight to Perth which is due to arrive in [View Full Entry]

Sentosa Sunbathing Asia » Singapore » Sentosa Island
On my last day in Singapore, I decided to venture out of the wonderful city centre and head for the beautiful Island Resort of Sentosa - it had been highly reccommended by the guy sitting next to me on the plane over here, so I thought it was at least worth a look = he was SO RIGHT!!! I checked out of the Hostel from Heaven at around midday, and then took the extremely long journey to Harbour Front MRT Station - I think it'd would've been a lot easier and quicker if I hadn't had my hideously heavy backpack with [View Full Entry]

Following on from that last post, I’m pleased to report that the Hong Kong peak tram did indeed take us above the smog layer, though I’ve been on roller coasters with less severe gradients. The view was suitably impressive and the McDonalds at the top as nourishing, though a little more touristy, than our regular breakfast haunt. I have to confess, on the subject of taking in local culture, that our regular evening haunt was an Irish pub populated exclusively by Europeans. There was the occasional Asiatic there, but I suspect they were Chinese Americans also on vacation. This is pe [View Full Entry]

Singapore - a FINE City! Asia » Singapore
Already on my first day here in Singapore I knew I loved this City! I know it sounds bad, but I truely am a Western girl at heart! After spending weeks in totally challenging places, I have to admit that the cleanliness, reliable public transport and the ability to find all the essentials I require (good chocolate, decent supermarkets and air conditioning!) have definitely won me over! I'm really enjoying the Cosmopolitan feel of this place, and in a strange way, kinda feel a little at home here - weird! On arrival, I found my way easily to the MRT (the [View Full Entry]

Well 4 weeks in now and having returned to Delhi via another overnight train we left India for Singapore... a welcome change. It is hot and wet here causing a constant sweaty nutsack and etreme sandal wearing. (just for andrew i would add) . First thing we did was eat some food without washing our hands in bleach first - red meat and burgers have featured high in our diets over the last 2 days alongside chocolate and ice cream. We feel like someone is about to take all food away so best eat in case we never do again! Singapore [View Full Entry]

Hey All, Well we pick up following my visit to the earth dragon. Myself and a couple of the lads head to Raffles hotel for a world famous singapore sling. Raffles is an amazing hotel very colonial. Your not allowed through the main hotel in your shorts but we're allowed to work through some side corridors. The rich people look at me as though I'm a peseant, I think it might be something to do with hair! Anyhow as most of you know I spent alot of time researching this trip and one of things I did with Clur before I [View Full Entry]

And we're off! Asia » Singapore » Changi
Blog entry has been backdated. It was kinda rushed for the preparation of the entire trip. Thanks to my last exam which ended on 1st, I started packing two nights before and rushing everywhere to change currency to HK dollars and RMBs. Armed with leftover maps of HK, Shenzhen and a well-worned Lonely Planet book titled 'Hong Kong & Macau' by Steve Fallon, circa 2002 freshly borrowed out from the library. I intended to travel *light*, which entailed packing some shirts, a few pants. Had an intention not to have any check-in luggage on board, heard budget air [View Full Entry]

Are we there yet! Asia » Singapore
Hey All, Well I'm here I've arrived in Singapore. They say the first thing you notice about Singapore is how clean it is. Well I have to agree the place is very clean, however, the first thing I noticed was the dodgy carpet in the airport that look like some curtains me Nan had when I was younger. Considering that Singapore airport is regarded as one of the best in the world it wasn't a good first impression. However as you move through and out of the airport you do start to notice why this airport is one of the best. [View Full Entry]
