As soon as we landed in Singapore I could tell it was going to be a LOT different than in Indonesia, that’s for sure! We took an MRT, which is just like what we rode on Kuala Lumpur, just about everywhere in the city. People looked at me kind of funny though when we were riding it. I don’t think they’re used to seeing monkeys traveling with humans. We stayed at a hostel where we had an air conditioned room, for ONCE, and shared it with 8 other people. That’s how hostels work. You have to share a room with other people, but it saves you a lot of money because it’s so much cheaper than a hotel or a guesthouse when you’re in expensive cities like this. We even got free breakfast in the morning, so I ate as much bread and jam as I could before heading out to explore the city.
One of the first things Nate and Jessie did was find an Indian restaurant, what a surprise huh? I think they’re obsessed with Indian food now! We actually stayed in a part of the city called Little India, which is where most of the Indian population
lives. I’m sure for all you kids in the US you think of Native Americans when I say Indian, but these people are actually from a country called India, a place we’ll be visiting at the end of our trip. We were so glad to have cheap public transportation because it was even hotter here than in Indonesia! I was sweating almost as much as NATE was. Singapore is a really clean city though. It actually reminded me of when I was in Hong Kong, just a lot smaller. One thing people love to do here is shop. There are malls everywhere! For all you girls out there who love to shop, this is a good city for you. You can find just about everything you could ever want here…well, if you’re a human anyways. Monkeys have a harder time finding clothes. The main thing Nate and Jessie bought was a new camera because Jessie’s broke when we were leaving Indonesia. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t fix it. I guess I wasn’t meant to be a camera repairman. That’s ok, I’ll just stick to traveling.
We spent one day going to Chinatown and walking around
to see some of the temples. One of them in particular was really neat. It had 4 different levels to it. On the first level, there were lots of people chanting prayers, but we didn’t go in that one because we didn’t want to bother them. Besides, I don’t know Chinese, so how could I blend in? Haha! For this temple, even Nate had to cover up his legs and shoulders. He had to wear a wrap around his waist and I just HAD to give him a hard time. “Nate! You look like a girl with a dress! Hahahaha!!!” Nate: “Thanks a LOT Wylie! Haha!” He knew I was just kidding. Luckily I didn’t have to wear one. I guess when you have legs that are as hairy as mine, you don’t have to worry about covering them up. Score one for Wylie! On another level, there were over 1,000 small Buddhas, each sitting in its own glass case and making up the wall that went around the entire room. I got some cool pictures on this floor! At the top, there was a really neat rooftop garden with a GIANT prayer wheel in the middle. Nate had to
help me push it though since it was WAY too heavy for little ‘ol me to push.
I was the most excited for the next day. We were going to the Zoo and to a Night Safari afterwards! Yes! Do you kids like going to the Zoo, too? As soon as the alarm went off in the morning, I jumped up on Jessie, “Rise and shine sleepy head! We’re going to the Zoo today! Yay!!” Nate and Jessie aren’t really morning people, so I quick got them some coffee to wake them up and off we went. I was so excited when we got to the Zoo that I could barely contain myself. It was such a nice Zoo! We saw all kinds of my relatives! There were tons of monkeys everywhere, including gibbons, orangutans, and even baboons. A couple of the Zoo keepers were tossing bananas in for lunch time, and one of the baboons was actually doing flips in the air to get their attention! Isn’t that crazy?! I’ve never seen a wild monkey do that before in my life. Then I saw one of the other ones jump up a good 2 feet in the air
and catch a banana in mid air! Wow! Did you used to play baseball when you lived in the jungle? What a catch! After seeing them, we went to see the next animal, a crocodile! When we first saw it, we thought it was fake because it was so big and it wasn’t moving. But then, it closed its massive mouth for just a second and we knew it was alive. This guy was at LEAST 12 feet long, not someone you’d want to mess with that’s for sure. It’s so weird for me to be at a Zoo now and be looking at so many animals that I just saw in the wild the past few months. I know, I’m a lucky monkey! Some of the snakes we saw were huge, too, and we even got to see 2 leopards eating their lunch as the Zoo keepers tossed in chunks of meat for them to eat. That was really cool to see!
Our time at the Zoo was a lot of fun and I was super excited to go to the Night Safari. There were trails where you walked for part of the time and then a road
that went around the whole park for the tram to take people around. The first thing we really liked was the flying squirrel. You have to walk through 2 sets of doors to get into the cage, and you’re literally in the cage with it! As soon as we walked in, it glided right over the top of us. I could have jumped off Jessie’s shoulder and touched him he was so close to us! The neat thing about the Night Safari is getting to see a lot of the same animals as the Zoo but they’re more active because it’s night time, and most of them are nocturnal. That means they spend most of the day sleeping and get active at night instead. We saw rhinos, giraffes, mouse deer, more lions, and many, many more! I really just wanted to sleep over in the park, but the workers told me I couldn’t and I had to go back to the city. Darn.
We didn’t have too much more time to spend in Singapore, so we couldn’t really do much else. Nate was happy that we at least got to go eat at Indian food again after only eating
rice for so many weeks. The funny thing is, Nate and Jessie have been eating so much rice that when they don’t eat it for just one day, they actually MISS it now! Can you believe that? How many of you kids out there like to eat rice? Even though we only had a few days to spend here, we had a lot of fun getting to go to the Zoo and Night Safari. Our next country we’re visiting is the Philippines. I have a feeling we’re about to be spending a LOT of time on the beach…AND on ferries to get from island to island. I can’t wait to see what adventures are coming up!
Still on the road,
Wylie
