So, after a 22 hour flight, I'm in Singapore! I didn't get much sleep the night I arrived because I decided to sleep on the floor of the airport. I have been staying at the Prince of Wales Hostel/Pub in the Little India district. It is a nice place---clean and friendly. I've been hanging out with a Brazilian, an Aussie, and a Coloradan. The first day was a struggle; my brain just didn't seem to work. I couldn't remember whether I had received linens (and I couldn't find them anywhere), so I went up to the owner and asked for a set of linens. She was mad and thought I was trying to steal a pair of sheets!
It is true what people say about Singapore---it is clean! Definitely my favorite area in Singapore is Little India. It is packed with people and there's is always so much going on. There is a Hindu holiday going on called Deepavali, the Festival of Lights. All of the streets were lit up with crazy, glowing structures. It is difficult to explain and the pictures don't do justice.
Another thing people say about Sing is that it has some of the best
food in the world. Again, true! There are a few distinct cultures here: Indians, Chinese, and Malays. An Indian man took me out to lunch one day and we had some Indian food that was served on a banana leaf. Wow, was it good! It involved rice (of course), various curries and some deep fried balls of breaded fish. It took some time getting used to eating with my fingers. But WOW, what an experience for less than US$1!
