Background: Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe.

Met up with the German girls from the tour for a day trip to Singapore’s Sentosa island, a reclaimed island built in the 60’s. I think its Singapore’s only decent beach as everyone advised us to visit it. We took the bottomless cable car across to the island. It was more expensive than the normal cable car by £1 and meant we didn’t have to queue. We sat on the man-made beach for a couple of hours in the sun. The water was so polluted I didn’t swim and the 19 oil tankers I counted in the close distance put me [View Full Entry]

Hi readers Well where were we? Oh yes on Koh Lipe and moving back to a superior bungalow - well, we were lucky they had one but we had to spend three nights in the standard - not so good. As we said cold shower but air con - unfortunately the bloody air con packed up so not a good night's sleep on the last night. So glad to be back to superior even though Bob thinks he has let down the backpacking fraternity by us being wimps. Spent most of the time on the beach during the day and during [View Full Entry]

Singapore was interesting - not someplace I chose to go necessarily as it was more of a requirement for the stopover to Oz, but glad I stopped for a few days as it's a different place - such a mixture of different cultures, religions and cultures to create somewhere really unique. I loved staying in little India as it was a cool part of the city. The food is amazing - sampled as much as I could of course, but my appetite is smaller than when at home due to the heat and humidity. Was very odd staying in a hostel [View Full Entry]

Southernmost point of Asia, Sentosa Island

Hello all, Well following a great couple of days in Brisbane we travelled to Singapore, where we met more relatives for the New Year Celebrations. This time it was the Bannon family, Norbert, Margaret, Catherine(who works in the Irish Embassy and was the reason for the family visit), Christopher, David and Patrick. It was a great few days which Included a New years party on Siloso beach, almost like a one night festival. The dancing legs were on, and it was full daylight before we got home, a good night! Once upon a time, when I had a lot of money and I was born to spend a lazy days lying on the Siloso Beach drinking mango juice. Oh, well, in my dreams it would be like that, but the reality is another story though. Actually we had a field trip to that luxurious resorts. Kind of a funny thing that this resort, targeted for honeymooners and lovers and "true romance seekers" is only 5 minutes way from our school. So near but still so far.. It's location is said to be excellent, just at the heart of Singapore's hippest beach [View Full Entry]

Married 4 days and already deserted!!! I'm sitting in the hotel room on my own writing this....... but more of that later. Well we've made it safe and sound to Singapore this morning and have had a lovely lazy day unpacking and sitting at the pool. We went out of the hotel and walked down to the restaurants in Sentosa for dinner - to those of you that said the food was good here you were definitely right, it was fantastic, although I ordered “Tastes of Singapore”, got a variety of dishes and I couldn't tell you what meat they all [View Full Entry]

Weird sea creature fountains

Hi Everyone My time is Asia is now drawing to a close. I leave the hostel to fly to Melbourne in about 15mins. Have enjoyed the VERY hot weather. Am nervous about the Aussie winter, so visited Topshop to get a nice hoodie jumper :o) Went to Sentosa Island yesterday. Reminded me of Jurassic Park. All man made. Very commercial but good fun. Went with a Canadian friend I made and we went via cable car over the sea. Went on the luge (go-kart/taboggon) alot! Saw 'pink' dolphins and went to the filthy beach. Am very sad to leave Singapore, as [View Full Entry]
