Monday 24th November - Day 85 - We arrived in Singapore at about 6pm. We made it!!! Despite not quite going to plan (losing the car after a couple of days, going through Vietnam and Cambodia instead of Laos, and losing Adelle along the way) we have travelled from London to Singapore without flying. Hurrah! We left Kuala Lumpur at 10am that day. We were supposed to arrive in Singapore in mid-afternoon but unfortunately we had an incompetent driver who must have had a weak bladder as all we seemed to do was stop for toilet breaks. But eventually we were at the border, which apart from the threat of the death penalty if you do anything wrong, went fine. I'm pretty sure we left a couple of people behind though as the bus seemed emptier on the other side. Once in Singapore City everything is organised and clean. We grabbed a taxi and he explained how they work together with the police and showed me an example of being sent a description of a mugger to look out for on his in car computer. Our driver dropped us off in Little India where we booked into a hostel with dorm
rooms. It's so much more expensive here, prices are similar to London, which is a shock after being in Asia for so long. We immediately booked a flight to Cairns in Australia which leaves on Wednesday night, before heading out for a few drinks to celebrate getting here.
Our plan now is to hire a vehicle in Australia and drive from Cairns to Melbourne (if we don't break down after 2 days!!) in time for New Year.
Tuesday 25th November - I got up early today, probably because i am in a dorm room. Today is the only full day here so straight after breakfast i headed out. I decided to walk to save money on cabs and although it's hot out, it is nowhere near as humid as it was in Kuala Lumpur. I headed first to the Singapore Flyer (basically the same as the London Eye). It was about a 40 minute walk although would have been a lot quicker if not for the dozens of cross roads and endless waiting at traffic lights. For the first time since leaving the UK though, people actually give way on zebra crossings! The Flyer was expensive (S$30, almost
15pounds) but it was brilliant as i got to see the whole city, something i didn't get to do in Kuala Lumpur. From here, i wandered slowly back to the hostel but in a different direction, passing a few war memorials and cutting through a few parks. At times, it's difficult to remember that you're in a city, when it's not rush hour the streets are quiet and there are moments when you are completely on your own - something that never happens in London. By the time i got back i was knackered so relaxed for the rest of the day, we check out tomorrow at 11am and will have to find something to fill the time until we leave for the airport at 9pm.
