Jetlag finally caught up with me and I woke at 0045 and couldn't get back to sleep. I read till 0530 and finally collapsed into bed and slept till 1030. After breakfast, did some blogging to upload the photos from Italy and had leftover Tuna Curry for lunch - Julie's promised me the recipe! We headed out to Holland Village to the tailor (to take up the hem of my new trousers) and repair the Murano bracelet I had stupidly tried to put on over my splint! We then headed for Orchard Road and on to the Fullerton Hotel, a beautiful old hotel right on the banks of the Singapore River. With the Grand Prix starting tomorrow, many roads were closed and the traffic was heavy but we met Sheila O'Brien and her visitors Deb and ... read more

“Everyone is waiting for something” said the Singaporean taxi driver when I asked him why is he waiting to visit the place that he likes the most, the place that he visited thrice in his life last of which was in 1994, the place where his god lives! Then the driver went on to explain that this god is the god of gods, the almighty. That he cannot visit the Almighty’s home without an invitation from the Omnipresent. The invitation is what the driver is waiting for, that his god is omnipotent and omnipresent and that nothing moves with out him moving it. Interestingly the god is a he and can only be a he. And hence a visit can only be attempted when he sends the invite with his signature sign off. Here is where ... read more

Thursday July 23, 2010 I awoke Thursday morning to heavy thunderstorms so once again I spent time catching up, cruising the internet and of course catching up with friends on facebook, since it was not allowed in China. Rich is done with work on Friday so we will have Saturday and Sunday to explore, and finish up any shopping we want to do before we head home on Monday. Arriving in Atlanta sometime around 4pm, which will be 4am our time so expect blurry eyes if you happen to see us wondering around. Thursday evening we decided to head to the Holland Village area. This is described as the expat area of Singapore and is a converted sight of army barracks. We had been told about a restaurant called Michelangelos that had been around for some ... read more

Feb 23 Singapore So my plane was about an hour late or so but i eventually made it to Singapore. I managed to take the subway to a stop near Jay K's house and then walked about 20 mins or so to his place. Along the way there was a local food court so i stopped for some roast duck and rice. It was pretty good. Once i got to Jays place it was pretty late so i checked out my replacement camera and hit the sack. Feb 24 Today i had a lot planed. Fist off was some local spot for breaky. I had my first soft boiled eggs and what they called French toast loaf. It was pretty good some sort of sugar cain jelly or something inside. After breaky i walked down the ... read more

I arrived in Singapore on Tuesday..I think...I have totally lost track of the days so I'll just guess Tuesday. Anyway, my first full day in Singapore I woke up late and went to meet my friend Liz for lunch in the office (the company I work for has an office here) and I saw a consultant who has moved here from London too. Was nice to catch up with him. The nearest MRT is Raffles Place, which I guess I can say is most like Liverpool Street and Docklands in London; lots of sky scrapers and suits walking about the place at great speed with purpose. It's a nice place to look around for a little while, but you can move on pretty quickly once you've had a look at the skyline. I went for lunch ... read more

Mabuhay Gardens It is now Sunday morning in Southeast Asia, The Philippines, at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Centennial II, strictly for Philippine Airlines. The flight from Frisco to Manila took about twelve hours, direct, without any stoppage in Guam. Now I am sitting here at the Mabuhay Lounge in NAIA Centennial II, waiting for the last leg of my flight from Manila to Singapore to depart. I will be in Singapore for a couple of days to see some friends and just to rest before I fly again to Siem Reap, Cambodia. I plan to just hang out in Cambodia for about a week and wonder at the grandeur of the Temples of Angkor. I have never been to Cambodia. I’ve only heard about it from a song by the Dead Kennedys, a punk group ... read more

Well you’ll all be pleased to know that after we disgraced ourselves with the worlds longest-blog-on-one-single-subject-that-interests-only-the-writers that this blog will be short and sweet. We really haven’t got a whole lot to report from the last 2 weeks. We moved onto Flores full of hope as Lise has been there before and couldn’t wait to show it to Al. We arrived in Labuan Bajo which admittedly has the charm of dog poop on your shoe but it has the redeeming feature that it’s the land base for diving in Komodo National Park (oh, and it was the only destination we could get any tickets to!) When we arrived the same touts who Lise knew from last time found us again and recognised us. They were very excited that they knew Lise until they remembered they owed ... read more

A Blogging Son of a Sailor's Whore The Straight Times and Today are the governments two vehicle of mass media propaganda. You won't read anything critical of government policies in either of these two publications. " Never Question Authority" is what every living, breathing Singaporean is brought up to think. The minute you start to think critically, and make those criticism publicly known or worse yet, broadcast them in the mainstream media, which is to say government controlled television, radio, and the two soft dailies, you get shut down fast, swiftly, coldly, like a child misbehavin'. You could be a man in your thirties with a wife and kids, and still you get treated like a child. That's exactly what happened to a blogger who tried to be too clever, airing out his criticism of government ... read more
