So the journey sounds simple enough....KL to Cairns. I'll start from the beginning. It was a sad goodbye to Maher, although it won't be too long before I see him again. I woke at 4.30am and took the 6am train at KL station to BTS/TBS for my connecting bus to Singapore. 6.5hrs later after 3 stops; one a toilet break, one for Malay immigration ad one for Singapore immigration. I arrived at beach road, Singapore. From there I walked to rail train station and took 3 trains to changi airport. I then had a 5 hr wait for my flight to sydney, whcih involved a 2hr layover and onward domestic flight into cairns. So over 24hrs later, here I am in cairns! I'm staying 5 nts at Caravella 149 backpackers which is nice, right by the ... read more

So, here we are at Changi Airport, Singapore with about three hours to kill before we can board our on bound flight to Istanbul. Might as well start the travel diary!! We were up early this morning to take the dogs for a nice long walk in the cool of morning before a 30°+ day. It was weird to think that we would be leaving Melbourne in the grip of a heatwave to fly to Istanbul where the forecast is for days between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius!! Definitely a first for us to head to the Northern hemisphere in their winter. Usually we miss several weeks of winter Down Under and head to the Northern hemisphere in their summer. The other weird thing about this holiday has been the long break between finishing work and ... read more

We were sad to leave Joe and Gemma in Brunei and the weather showed it's sadness to with a fabulous rainstorm just as we were leaving. Despite a change to an earlier flight from Singapore we still had 6 hours to wait so we negotiated the MRT into the city from the airport.....just about! After queuing for a ticket at the ticket office (first mistake) were were then informed we had to get a ticket from a machine. With this done (thanks to a very patient assistant) we went through the barrier looking for the train line and finding none (second mistake) walked out of the barrier at the other end thus cancelling our tickets. It appears the track is behind glass doors we took for advertising hoardings! The 35 min journey was good although on ... read more

Moscow to Singapore (9 hours; Depart: 4:50 pm Saturday, Arrive: 5:50 am Sunday) You’d think that traveling often would translate into being a savvy traveler. Sometimes, yes. Other times, no. Case in point: in progress right now. When I was booking this trip initially, I thought I was going from Houston to Perth. In that situation, it is faster to go through Singapore. However, when I was in London last week, I found out I needed to go to Brisbane first, then Perth. Without consulting a map, I called the travel agent and asked that she re-ticket me from Singapore to Brisbane instead; keeping the initial HoustonàMoscowàSingapore route. Bad mistake – go look at a map. Wrong side of a massive island continent. While having Thanksgiving dinner with my brother-in-law, I told him of my itinerary. ... read more

Hi everyone, Decided to try and do a blog while we are traveling as it's an easy (well we hope it is) way to allow our friends and family to keep up to date with what we are up to! As most of you are aware i am not the best flyer and our flight to Singapore was 13hours!!! It was actually much better than anticipated, infact one of the most enjoyable flights I have been on (and I wasn't even drunk!) The plane was so big (it had two floors) that I hardly felt anything. There was plenty to do on the flight to keep paul entertained, we had our own tv which had movies,tv,music, games etc on. There was a skycam we could watch...which was a webcam attached to the outside of the plane, ... read more

I have a bit of time here in Singapore so thought I would tell you about Rhodes. We left Marmaris in Turkey on Thursday afternoon and got a ferry agross to Rhodes were Di had booked Martin and I into the Sheriton for a couple of nights so we could recover from the hard work putting the boat to bed. We artrived in Rhodes and we are so impressed with this old town and its surrounds. the only down side was that the wind was onshore spoiling the beach swimming a bit. But we had a good couple of days and now we have been traveling from Rhodes to Athens, athens to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Singapore and now onto Christchurh and then home. We have not seen rain for the last 3 months and I have ... read more

We have landed in Singapore after two extremely long flights with a stop in Moscow, Russia. We are flying with Singapore Airlines on a very large 350 passenger jet. The nicest feature about the plane is the entertainment system which includes close to 100 free movies to choose from, TV shows and music. Kevin also found a golf video game to play to try and pass some of the time. Again, longest 20 hours of my life. I slept maybe 4 hours total and poor Kevin didn't sleep a wink. The food was not great, but decent and there was plenty of it at all times. Overall, a good flight into Asia. Moscow wasn't worth a post. It was really dirty and the people were like a herd of cattle in a pen speaking many different ... read more

Day 49 Arrived in Singapore right on time @ 0600 after a long flight from Roma. The seats on this flight felt like ones from an old Dash 8 plane - hard and bloody uncomfortable so sleep was in bits. Decided to walk from T2 to T3 at Changi airport (for those who know Changing this is a reasonable walk). Problem was my directional calculator was a bit off and we ended up walking to the end of T2 then had to come back past where we started again to get to T3. D'oh... Oh well, a 40 minute walk helped kick away the sitting blues....... Straight to the shower place for a well needed refreshing shower then to try and get dry (28 C when we landed and getting steamier). Do some last minute duty ... read more

The flight from Dubai to Singapore was brilliant, only 7 and 1/2 hours but could happily have had more! Literally 80 choices of films, Lauren watched The Vow and This Means War and Ben watched science programmes and Act Of Valour, we really should have slept but the flight was just really good... We really recommend flying with Singapore airways to everyone. Check in was awesome as before and I commented to Ben wouldn't get as good seats as the virgin flight and she upgraded us to the exit seats where only two seats! The other were 3 seats either side and 5 in middle, there was a slight kerfufle as we got on and someone was in them! The flight was transitting from Cairo and some gents thought they'd have them- they hadn't met Lauren who ... read more

After 2 failed attempts, I am finally doing it. I'm off to fulfill my childhood dream to STEP on THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA! I want to accomplish this feat so I can move on with scheming new things. It's like a whirlwind since I decided to quit my job. Even before I tendered my resignation I already bought my air ticket to Beijing. It was like a motivation or a deadline that I should leave before then. I know I have the tendency to drag on things even if it is futile in keeping the same. I won't discuss my work-related issues, I have chosen to let go of whatever it was. Another thing that has made me really take this leap of faith now is that I was getting sick a lot since December ... read more
