We arrived to sunny and hot Singapore on Midsummer’s eve. The difference to Java was striking; everything was clean and well organized, and there was space everywhere. After checking in to our room we went for lunch with Anna and Ville, friends from Finland currently living in Singapore, and their new born baby Viktor. Ville had to go back to work after the lunch, but the rest of us then went for a brief sightseeing through the business district with its sky scrapers and bold contemporary architecture to Gardens By The Bay, a big outdoor area with areas for different countries containing information on their culture. There was also a daily light show displayed on futuristic looking mushroom monuments that we watched before continuing to the Arab quarters for dinner. The next day, Midsummer day, Anna ... read more

Life is busy with cooking, friends, travels, books, movies (we have a cable at home) etc. So finally I have a life. Drinking a lot of water, reduced my salt and sugar content so much so the food seems tasteless without the accompanying chicken curry! My flatmate installed flat screen TV and set up the cable network in the house. My duty in the morning is to clear the bins and deposit in the big bin while on my way to office. It has been raining cats and dogs making the mornings lazy. Found a library close by. There are some wonderful beaches just 500ms from my house. It is a long stretch with barbecue pits, restaurants, picnic spots, cycling, skating, jogging, running and all sorts of facilities. So try to spend mornings there and ... read more

It feels like it has only been yesterday that I visited Johor. The city atmosphere was feeled with livelyhood and there was lots of things to do. The first I did in Johor was to check into a hotel and put a my heavy things there. Then I took some cash and other personal items and visited the first food store that I came across for lunch as I was famished. I came across a small store that sold all sorts of food stuffs that ranged from drinks to local food such as penang laksa and mee goreng. I went for the penang laksa and pair it with some teh tarik. After that, I went to the pasar malam to shop for something to munch on while shopping. I brought some seaweed crackers because I really ... read more

Haven't updated here in a while, but will do my best to describe what I've been up to! As always, things have been pretty busy, especially on the weekends. I'll start at this weekend just passed, as it's the freshest in my memory! Had a pretty lazy day on Saturday, actually, but got around to going to the bank and opted to walk for a change. It's not all that far but because it's so bloody hot you tend to take your time! Ended up sorting out my internet banking, or at least signing up, and then headed back to have lunch at my usual spot at the hawkers. Much to the normal waitress' surprises I DIDN'T order a large Tiger beer and instead opted for a nice refreshing (homemade) ice lemon tea and got the ... read more

Hey all! The last week and a half or so have been pretty ram-packed, but every moment has been fantastic. I'm getting to learn more and more about Singapore every day and the more I do see, the more I love it! One of the things I've become more familiar with is that there's just so much to see and do. Sure you've got your super modern shopping malls, awesome cinemas, a fantastic selection of restaurants and indoor activities, but there's a whole host of amazing stuff to do outdoors - some of which I've been exploring the last few days or so. Last Sunday saw us hiking more or less to the other side of Singapore to the Singapore National Zoo and "luckily" it was overcast and raining! Sounds bizarre, but how glad I am ... read more

Hey everyone! So I've finished my first week here in Singapore (actually a little over now)! To tell the truth it has flown by and work has been pretty busy as I try to find my feet in the company and get settled properly into my duties. Work has been great so far and the people are really nice, so it has been good fun. Singapore is somewhat how I expected it to be in the sense that the way things are run here just seem to be so smooth, easy and convenient. It is incredibly westernised here and there are still many traces of British colonialism ranging from their government, which is identical to ours, to the schooling system which also uses GCSEs and A-Levels. There's this sense of comfort and co-operation about the place ... read more
