The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south. To be updated

Goodbye Philippines Asia » Philippines » Baguio
Left the country 31 May 2002 with daughter DJ.....for a new life's chapter in San Jose, California Baguio City, Philippines has been my home for over 15 years....city of peace loving people and energy boosting climate...I say that because when I reach Baguio after travelling to another region or province, drained of energy, it feels like I just woke up from a very restful sleep... Too bad though that Baguio has lost many pine trees along with their scent not to mention their natural airconditioning purpose.... FOR TOURIST: best place to eat although there's plenty, is Barrio Fiesta al [View Full Entry]

I'm back in Homonhon Island. I took the land trip again with Lina and her daughter this time. Emie's niece is getting married after the town fiesta. I'm glad to be back. My first stop is Habag town in Homonhon and afterward I'm going to Bitaugan to stay with Emie and her family. I walk around town with Lynie (Lina's daughter) and Liza, her cousin who lives there. I was able to visit Little Habag, a few minutes walk from the plaza (my point of reference; it's where the basketball court is located). We visited Mana Naning and her family. I [View Full Entry]

May is the time of most festivities in the Philippines. "Fiesta". Many people from the cities would usually take time off to attend their town fiestas in the provinces. I went to visit a friend (whose only daughter is also my godchild). My friend Emie's cousin, Lina was also going home to Homonhon Island for the May fiesta. I took the land trip with her, with her son Nathan, and nephew Rigel. We took the Eagle Bus Transport. I almost backed out of the trip because the bus was "fully loaded" on the aisle. Passengers had a lot of things, boxes [View Full Entry]

It was our semestral break in school. Me and my school buddies decided to go to puerto galera to have some fun. We boarded JAM transit in pasay going to batangas pier. As Puerto Galera was not yet fully developed (not sure) at that time, there was no tourist around except for a couple whom we met while we were having lunch. the place was very nice and actually almost paradise. am looking forward to visit galera again. "Puerto Galera is a coastal town well known among tourists coming to the Philippines for its numerous beaches ad many snorkeling and dive [View Full Entry]

The Scenic Route Asia » Philippines » Mindoro
On the Road The plan leaving Siquijor was to hop across Negros Island and arrive at the capital city of Panay Island, Iloilo, where we’d then catch a 28 hour ferry boat crossing the northern Sulu Sea destined for Puerto Princessa, Palawan. Palawan is considered the final frontier of the Philippines. Most people fly to Palawan. For about $50 return flying is a good option. But we’re on a tight budget and boats are less than $50. That was the plan anyway. On Negros we made a brief stop at a cheap guesthouse run by an Australian man and his much [View Full Entry]

On my second summer in the university, I wanted to travel more but didn't have the money. Heck, I was just a student, and getting by with my DOST stipend at that. I know it may not be in line with my computer studies, but I felt that if I spend my summer elsewhere outside Manila, it would help me more, and on a personal level. I heard about Ugnayan ng Pahinungod in school so I immediately signed up. There, I met other students with the same interest but different fields. I am the only Computer Science student in that [View Full Entry]

I was still on my second year of college when I first saw Cebu, Surigao City, and Cagayan De Oro City. I don't exactly remember when that was but the trip gave me a good impression of my country. It's so beautiful and there's more to see beyond Cavite, Paranaque, and the malls of Las Pinas! Hahaha... talk about being a mallrat. I remember, though, that I bugged and nagged my mom for another trip to Surigao as a graduation gift. And she did give it to me! I stayed in my lola's house for more than a month, a [View Full Entry]

Looking Back: Bantayan Island - Dec. 1996. After Christmas of 1996, my friends and I planned an out of town trip. This was to be the first of the many trips we'll be having. Our first stop was Cebu City, we stayed at my uncle's place. My cousins were our tour guide. the first few days we visited, the Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills; Magellan's Cross across the Sto. Nino Shrine; a beach in Mactan. The food is inexpensive and local cuisine was superb. We took a fast ferry, Oceanjet 2 of Socor Shipping Lines to Sta. Fe, Bantayan. It [View Full Entry]

Looking Back: Boracay - Jan. 1993. The first time I went to Boracay was after I met Margrit in Bangkok. She is from Hungary and has travelled a lot. I also learned about the Lonely Planet guides from her. At the airport in Bangkok, I bought several Lonely Planet guides, of course, I got a Phillipines guidebook. I travel in the Philippines but to places where I had relatives. I began to travel to Cebu in my late teens, I have an uncle whose family is based there. After my friends and I graduated from college, our first trip together [View Full Entry]
