An article I wrote for a virtual team at work, it goes...
A travelling girl whether alone or in a group has its advantage and disadvantages; we can either be a liability or an asset. We are usually capable of getting away with things with a flutter of eyelashes or with an enchanting smile. We do know how to make use of that feminine charm to get ourselves out of trouble, or at least win us a discount. We are the first ones to be offered a seat or ushered out in times of urgent situations; perhaps the reason why there are more women than men is because the latter are often left behind in a sinking ship, see Titanic. Albeit it doesn’t work all the time, because once in a while we’d come across a pickle jar and we’d need a fine strapping man to open it for us. When the luggage gets too heavy, a muscular shoulder will be much of an aid, and most essentially a great deal of masculine shield is vital during encounters with a psychopath. If all else fails, those sexy red stilettos were made for a special reason. Why does a girl travel? We hit the road in search for ‘adventure’, whatever that means. We do it for mere R&R (Rest & Relaxation) and for our much-loved pastime, retail therapy. We journey to broaden our perspective on people and their diverse culture, to search for the lost art of solitude, to be one with nature, to provide aide for those in need, to experience the aesthetic of lostness, to strengthen bond with our family and friends, and to mend broken bones or broken hearts. Some of us prefer to travel light, some travel heavy, some travel with Louis Vuittons bags, and some travel with soiled backpacks. All reason just boils down to our common desire of seeing the unfamiliar, and that feeling of euphoria of experiencing and doing something for the first time, once more.
I could go on and on but I am still susceptible to missing a motive or a reason. I am a girl and I travel for a little bit of everything, I do it in pursuit of something I don't really know of and to feed the frustrated photographer in me. I travel to learn more about myself and to experience both the pleasant and the unlikable surprises people and places offer.
I have slept in hostels and napped at the side of the road, even slept in a park. I try very hard to travel cheap, sometimes in vain. I get to meet people along the road and share rooms with strangers, some of them interesting, some unbelievably annoying, some are plain scary, and some are worth remembering - each of them teaching me a lesson or two. I have since found out that it is so easy to start World War III if we didn’t know how to compromise. I am least pleased with the moment of transit, more so with flying. But either way it’s never going to be a reason to stay idle for too long. Travelling is addictive and not to mention, contagious. This is my escape from everyday life mundaneness and my way of keeping the sanity level in a good condition. I am a girl who is in a constant search of peace and quiet, and I love getting lost…in the most beautiful way.

What a nice article. I am also a girl of 50, yes, who loves getting lost in the most wonderful ways. I travel alone or with someone else. I always travel to get freedom...
