Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Tinipak River Asia » Philippines » Rizal » tanay
Emie and I decided to visit the Tinipak River in Rizal province. We didnt really know how to go there. We just asked for directions along the way. It's not that we like it that way. We just didnt really know how to get there but we knew we'd find our destination somehow. We heard about this place from some friends who went there. Emie and I love to swim and hike so off we went even if it was just the two of us. After about two hours of jeepney rides. We finally got to the Tanay station where there [View Full Entry]

Trail
Our group
Tinipak

It was my first major climb. It lasted for 4 days and 3 nights. Originally the itinerary included assaulting the summits of Mt. Mabiling, Mt. Lobo, and Mt. Tinglawan. Unfortunately, I was only able to assault until Mt. Lobo. The rest of the guys conquered Mt. Kabunian (it was a night trek and I was afraid to be a liability to them coz of my visual impairment). We were not able to reach Mt. Tinglawan coz we ran out of water and food. Check out the pictures. Will upload more soon. I hope. [View Full Entry]

Mystical Cave Asia » Philippines » Rizal » Antipolo City
Good Friday This holy week I wasn't able to do alay lakad but did the alay akyat instead. Mystical cave is located in Puting Bato. According to the local story an old woman named "Inday" explored the cave and had seen holy images inside. The water that drips from the rocks can heal illnesses. The road that leads to the foot of the mountain is not passable to vehicles because it is closed due to quarrying. Tricycles will only bring you to the highway that leads to the dirt road (for a fare of P50). We had to bring our own [View Full Entry]

Cooking, shooting Asia » Philippines » Rizal
Cooking, shooting. Hello everyone, from now on, all my posts will be written in English. I really regret that I didn’t do that from the beginning. The only reason why I posted in Swedish, was that two of my presumed readers have some problems understanding English. Since I’ve haven’t heard a single word from them during the weeks I’ve been posting, it feels a bit pointless to continue posting in Swedish. Hej igen, från och med nu kommer jag att skriva alla inlägg på engelska. Jag ångrar verkligen att jag inte gjorde det ifrån början. Den enda anledningen till att [View Full Entry]

A trip to Avilon Zoo Asia » Philippines » Rizal
I had been hearing nice things about this new zoo, located in Montalban, Rizal. Since, its Jeric's Birthday, i convinced him to celebrate it w/ nature. Along w/ his brother, and our very cute niece, Sylvanna, we travelled, for almost an hour to Avilon Zoo. At 730 am, they were already waiting for me at Chowking Philcoa. It's friday, and i took my day off the office, and travelled all along from Pampanga. After we had our breakfast at Dunkin Donuts, we rode a jeep in front of Jollibee, en-route to San Mateo, Rizal. The jeepney fare was approximately Php 20.00/each. [View Full Entry]

Daranak Falls Asia » Philippines » Rizal
Daranak Falls nestles quietly at the foot of the Tanay mountains, preserved with the natural vegetation, complemented with beautiful waterfalls, ponds, and rivers cascading through elaborate tropical trees and plants. This 14-meter high falls is truly a refreshing site. A short walk over the top of Daranak are smaller, cascading streams known as Batlag Falls. It is located at Bgy. Tandang Kutyo in the town of Tanay. The place has been transformed into a public park/resort operated by the government. It was raining when we got there. It was the typhoon that hit Real, Quezon and other parts o [View Full Entry]
