Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

The education in economics you get living in a third world country is a far cry from the education inside the walls of UNB or St. Thomas. Sara Lee, the American cupcake queen, sells cheap makeup at high prices to Filipinas. Gap jeans are made in Korean garment factories by Filipinas who are not suppose to see the labels being attached on the final assembly line. Even Nissan and Ford secretly wire the dashes of their vehicles destined for the North American market in Filipino factories with non-descript names. I am starting to wonder if there are any consumer products anymore [View Full Entry]

Well I have never seen an effigy burned like I saw one burned on International Women's Day. Gabriela deserves a standing ovation for the production they pulled of for this year March 8th. Last year the International Women's Day Rally came just after the President declared that no rallies could be held in the city without a permit. Gabriela rallied anyway, newly minted permit in hand the tension was apparently tangible between the police and the ralliers. This March 8th Gabriela seemed to be thumbing their noses at the PNP. The message was loud and clear as women and children poured [View Full Entry]

I was assigned the strangest, most interesting task this week. I was asked to give a consultation on Canadian poitics... seriously, me. I was feeling a little stange about it, not being a political scientist or a long time staffer, until I realized that even my one year working on the Hill still made me the closest thing to an expert the progressive groups in Manila have got. So I figured, what the hell. Instead of heading strait to Baguio at the end of last week, which was initially the plan, it was decided that I would stay in Manila to [View Full Entry]

Manila, Philippines On Feb. 26 we arrived in Manila at a port just outside the city. Shuttle buses took us to the Mall of Asia, the largest mall in all of Asia, we were told. We hadn’t scheduled a tour here, as most of them went out of the city so we took the shuttle. Traffic is horrible now that almost everyone has a car, and the bus ride took over 45 minutes. This mall is indeed gigantic and very modern since it is not more than 5 years old. Security was tight we were told because there was a US [View Full Entry]

This first half of the week are my last few days in Manila. It turns out that the conference being held in our compound, the conference that was initially going to lead to me being kicked out of my room 3 days early, is actually the National Conference on the Documentation of Indigenous Peoples' Human Rights. It turns out that I have been on the list of attendees for weeks. I am slated at the conference as an International Observer. Such a lofty title that really means the organizers couldn't find me a constant translator and so wanted me to know [View Full Entry]

The wave of mobilizations calling for the Ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo continued in Makati City, Metro Manila on Friday, with an interfaith prayer rally. The police and pro-administration politicians claim that the crowd hit approximately 15 000. The organizations involved, however, said that the number was closer to 85 000. Standing in the middle of the sweaty pack on Friday, shoulder to shoulder with Catholics and Protestants, praying for the justice and the honesty that citizens should be able to expect from their government I am more apt to believe the tally of the organizer [View Full Entry]

Much like the tuk-tuks in Bangkok, the Jeepnees here are an icon of Manila. (A ride on a jeepnee is a little safer bet than a tuk-tuk though)
Well, unfortunately I didn't get to see much of Manila (I am here on business, you know), but I did get to spend some time with friends and have some good meals along the way. Sunday I got in to my hotel - the Shangri-La Makati - too late to try any of the fantastic restaurants I've been told are here. Monday night some of my local friends who I know from onshore rotations at work took me to an innovative wine bar called Cav at the Serendra Mall at Fort Beneficio, Tuesday night our vendor partners took us to a [View Full Entry]

See how much bigger I am then other Filipinas!?!
I got two of the most entertaining compliments in the last couple of days. And considering how many random Filipino children, and gorgeous Filipino women tell me that I am beautiful, it takes a lot for a compliment to impress me these days. This afternoon lunch was catered in our compound because the staff are holding strategic planning meetings. Being within text range I got to take advantage of free lunch. Coming outside afterwards I meet three women who work for ECOLOF a micro-finance NGO that rents space in our building. Because I have been away from the compound for most [View Full Entry]

Welcome Rotunda
Welcome Rotunda
Even as it threatened to rain the group at the Welcome Rotunda grew bigger - thousands of people preparing to march through the streets of Manila demanding change.
This was texted to a friend of mine today just after the rally: A Filipino man dies and goes to heaven. Standing at the gates he sees many clocks, and so asks St. Peter what they are all for. "Each clock represents a life," said St. Peter, "and evertime the person attached to the clock lies it moves." "See here, this is Mother Theresa's clock, it never moved once. And here, this clock belongs to Abraham Lincoln, it only moved twice in his whole life." "Where is Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's clock?" asked the old man. "Oh, it's in Jesus's office. He is [View Full Entry]

I have to admit that I have been in Manila all this week and should have been writing every day. I can't even claim that I have been that busy, because it has really been a very relaxing week, with a lot of free time. But at the same time it has also been a very strange week for me emotioanly, and so I have been avoiding my journal and my blog both. So much of my time here so far has been spent dealing with my feelings about other people's situations and other people's problems. But as things wind down [View Full Entry]
