Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Hi guys....... Guess what? Matt has been sick as a puppy since we arrived... it didn't bode well when he was taking paracetamol at Abi Dhabi airport, or when he was projectile vomitted on the plane, but you live in hope so when we arrived in Manila we hit the town and met up with Jay and Glynette and sank a couple of buckets of beer all in good faith, assuring ourselves it was just jet lag and tiredness. Well that wasn't our brightest idea and since then Matt has had a fever, raging sore throat and an aversion to sunlight [View Full Entry]

Manila welcomed us with a 20 min wait on the tarmac followed by an immigration hall full of people. Even Filipinos have to fill in an arrival card here. Trust nobody.. where have I heard that before. We joined the queue with ~80 people in front of us. The airport felt like it hadn't been cleaned since the 70s, making me glad I had checked us into the Four Seasons Manila. Eventually we got through immigration, collected our bags and were on our way to our hotel, through the Manila slums. There was something about the outside of the four seasons [View Full Entry]

Manila Bay at sunset

So to Manila I flew to spend a long vacation. March 8 I left San Francisco on a direct flight to Manila. It was a mixture joy and anticipation, fatigue and discomfort to stay in the air inside a huge airplane for 14 hours as it travelled in high altitude and at a fast speed in order to reach our destination. Were it not for the amenities offered to all the passengers by its flight attendants, it would have been a bore. We watched two full-length movies, offered two meals and snacks, were soothed in our sleep by well-selected stereo music [View Full Entry]

Taking the light rail system around Manila is when I seem to see the most middle class people. Even when you combine the Metro Rail Train and the Light Rail Train the entire system still only hits the most busy shopping and business districts of the cities that make up Metro Manila. If you want to go into the poorer residential areas, the urban poor areas that even cabs don't always hit you have to take jeepneys and tricycles. So I am always interested in watching the people who are taking the light rail, to see the illusive middle class that [View Full Entry]

The education in economics you get living in a third world country is a far cry from the education inside the walls of UNB or St. Thomas. Sara Lee, the American cupcake queen, sells cheap makeup at high prices to Filipinas. Gap jeans are made in Korean garment factories by Filipinas who are not suppose to see the labels being attached on the final assembly line. Even Nissan and Ford secretly wire the dashes of their vehicles destined for the North American market in Filipino factories with non-descript names. I am starting to wonder if there are any consumer products anymore [View Full Entry]

Well I have never seen an effigy burned like I saw one burned on International Women's Day. Gabriela deserves a standing ovation for the production they pulled of for this year March 8th. Last year the International Women's Day Rally came just after the President declared that no rallies could be held in the city without a permit. Gabriela rallied anyway, newly minted permit in hand the tension was apparently tangible between the police and the ralliers. This March 8th Gabriela seemed to be thumbing their noses at the PNP. The message was loud and clear as women and children poured [View Full Entry]
