Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

getting on board my Air Asia flight...taking the stairs.
I wasn’t looking forward to that 4:30 a.m. wake up call, so I got up on my own at 4:20 a.m. I’d do it on my own terms. The taxi was waiting for me (prearranged) by 4:50, and I was off for the LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal outside K.L.) My Air Asia flight was at 7:20 a.m. on October 2 (Tuesday). With no traffic, we made it in less than 1 hour...plenty of time to navigate through the 1000’s of other people at the airport that were also up way too early. I got a good window seat near the [View Full Entry]

Last Aug.25, 2007 we celebrated my husband's 33rd birthday at Parque Espaņa Residence Hotel at Alabang Muntinlupa city where my sister currently works as a receptionist there. We stayed there overnight(we stayed at their Two Bedroom Suite with a maid's quarter) and brought some foods with us. Their room is beautiful and the furnitures seem new, there were 2 bathrooms and the kitchen is big and has a microwave oven, fridge and a gas range. One of the amenities is if you want to go to Festival Mall or Alabang Town Center a shuttle will be provided to and from. So [View Full Entry]

Manila Hotel Last June 20, 2007 my cousin Emma Ruth came home for the very first time since 1990 or 1991(?). she's now based on California USA and i was very excited to see her because the last time i saw her we were like teenagers and now we already have our own families. She and her husband together with their very cute kid and her in-laws checked in at Manila Hotel and we visited her there. check out our pics: According to their website: Manila Hotel is widely known for its illustrious past. Built in 1912, it is located in [View Full Entry]

Words can't describe how I feel right now (but they can try). I'm sitting on a bed in a room that I'm not sharing with anyone. I'm in a real house. With nothing but a ceiling fan blowing, my environment is at a comfortable temperature and humidity. I'm eating coconut pie. It's only 9:30PM and I don't have to be anywhere until 10am tomorrow. There's everything I need in the fridge to make pancakes. There are a bunch of mangos on the kitchen counter. I can't really hear any sounds except for crickets and stuff outside. And, probably best of all, [View Full Entry]

It is 9:30am. I have been awake and in my hotel since 11pm. I feel a little like Scarlett Johansson’s character in Lost in Translation. I am waiting for my friends from our vendor to come pick me up to go see a volcano that is nearby - they are coming at 10:30. It has been a long wait! I did venture out around 1am to go to 7-Eleven for a snack and then I realized that one of the two Starbucks right here was open, so I walked over to it and got myself a decaf latte and banana bread. Greetings from Manila! OK now that I have my bearings straight, I feel that I can say a few words. First, I have to say a big THANK YOU to my friend Chuck who gave me some sleeping aids (pills) for my trip, and I slept a solid 10+ hours on the leg from L.A. to Manila! I think that’s crazy!! I don’t sleep that much at home. That flight went by so fast, it was fantastic. Now granted, it was still a 15-hour flight or so, but it was shorter than the last time I flew because “they decided” not [View Full Entry]

Would you believe that they HAVE to shave their hair in order to work in Max Brener Philippines? No kidding. And we had a great Chocolate there, too.
We really tried not to come to Manila. Everyone we met told us not to come, whether because of her traffic, dirtiness or crime. Heck, even the lonely planet insinuates that you might as well head straight to Cebu, if you have diving and beaches in mind. Combined with the fact that every single weather website we've checked said that Aug-Sep is the worst time to come to Manila/Philippines, due to the monsoons, we really downplayed our expectations. So how come we got here despite the warnings? Well, that's easy, and in two words: cheap flights! Since the only low-cost fli [View Full Entry]

I think it's August 17, anyway. This time travel thing is really messing with my head. I'm currently in the air between Manila and General Santos City. In the last 24 or so hours I've spent at least 17 hours in an airplane and gotten about 5 hours of sleep. Oh, and I've skipped half a day. I left Dallas at 9am Wednesday morning and flew to Detroit. There, after a several-hour layover, I got on a lengthy flight to Nagoya, Japan. Wouldn't you know it, the entertainment system experienced technical difficulties (meaning: no movies). Unable to sleep for nearly the [View Full Entry]
