Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Good morning, This has been a really busy and enlightening week for me. I did my first immersion of the 4 I will do while training in Manila. This week's immersion was with a host family in a squater community in Quezon City, part of Metro Manila. The reason that I am training in Manila before going to Baguio is because the organization I will be working for in Baguio wanted me to understand the pattern of human rights abuse in the country, so that I wouldn't think that any issue was independant from the others. This week's immersion really brought [View Full Entry]

Payatas is a community built around a garbage dump, because it is the peoples' only source of income.
Evenin' folks, I have been in the Philippines for a week now, so I thought I would let you all know I am doing well and pass along my first impressions. I got into Manila last Friday at 11pm. The airport was super busy and the city's traffick was even worse. People here enjoy telling me that Manila traffick is always so bad that they refer to bad traffick as traffick. The people I heve met here so far are a lot like Maritimers, they are warm and protective and constantly joking and teasing. I am teased so consistantly here that [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Manila Wednesday morning without incident. This was a relief since the last time I was here the airlines delayed my luggage by more than 24 hours. This is a beautiful time of year in Manila. Hardly any rain - just an occasional sprinkle pushing through the clouds while the sun is still out. It has been warm but breezy, which is a nice break from the unseasonably cold weather we’ve been having in Atlanta (snow last week!). I’m staying in Makati this trip at the Somerset Olympia Makati. It is a fairly nice apartment-hotel in a bustling neighborhood. [View Full Entry]

I gotta get rid of my current friends and find new ones who travel (just kidding!!!!). Seriously though, it's easier said than done but I need to travel more, see new worlds. Certainly will make you put your life in perspective in a global scale. I had the best time in the Philippines, it's my best vacation so far, and longest. I'm at a free yahoo, internet cafe here in Narita Airport, Tokyo Japan, finishing up the first leg of my journey back. I spent some time time with family yesterday, did some local, low key stuff thankfully. After Puerto Galera I [View Full Entry]

I spent the whole day in Tarlac today. I got up at 6:30am, took the light rail to EDSA station and from there took a Victory Line bus to Tarlac to see some relatives. The trip was shorter than I thought, 3 hours as opposed to 4. I had lunch there at a great restaurant owned by my cousins. From there we spent some time hanging out with more family members, then for a couple of hours hung out at this monastery on this mountaintop. Great scenery. There was a giant statue of Jesus overlooking the mountain like the one in [View Full Entry]

I'm back in Manila. I've been too tired to blog lately but I have so many things I'd like to write about. The thing is, I can write them all down and sort them out when I get back, but usually, when I get back, I don't feel like re-writing anything. So I'll write about some initial impressions, I guess. I'm back in Manila now, in Malate, across the street where I originally stayed. I highly recommend Malate Pensionne. It's in between an outdoor bar and a Starbucks. A room with twin beds, a/c, TV and decent bathroom is $42. Not [View Full Entry]

First Day Asia » Philippines » Manila
At the hostel I met up with a bunch of high school grads from Denmark. They like it here in Malate. They're planning on being in the Philippines, in this area specifically, for 3 weeks. They're doing the "In Europe, kids travel the world before heading to college" thing. They like it in the Philippines, the only thing is they say it's more expensive than Indonesia and Thailand. Hard to believe. I came here because things are cheaper. Later on I met up with some girls from the Netherlands. One was visiting the other. The one living here is doing volunteer [View Full Entry]

Traveler's Prayers Asia » Philippines » Manila
Sharing with everyone two Catholic prayers for whenever we embark on our journeys. I believe that by modifying the prayers, these can be applicable to suit others' beliefs. TRAVELER's PRAYER 1 My holy Angel Guardian, ask the Lord to bless the journey which I undertake, that it may profit the health of my soul and body; that I may reach its end, and that, returning safe and sound, I may find my family in good health. Do thou guard, guide and preserve us. Amen. TRAVELER's PRAYER 2 O Almighty and merciful God, who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect [View Full Entry]

Philippines Holiday Asia » Philippines » Manila
Day 24 This was our last day in the Philipinnes. Ruby packed the bags in preparation for our 12:00 noon checkout from the Hotel. Around 8:30 we took a taxi to the Greenhills Shopping Centre to do some last minute shopping. We also had to buy some more luggage as we were tight on space (not surprising!). We were picked up by Odie around 11:00 am & went back to the Hotel. We checked out, put the bags in storage & waited in the reception to meet Ruby's friends Laura, who wanted to see us b [View Full Entry]
